The vibrant screen of the Brooklyn Mirage will remain off for the 2025 season as its parent company, Avant Gardner, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This move follows a tumultuous period for the popular East Williamsburg venue, which failed to execute a grand reopening in May after extensive renovations.
The appointment of a new CEO, Gary Richards, underscores the severity of the financial situation. The depth of the crisis was apparent even before the official bankruptcy announcement. He was overheard at a restaurant describing the company as “bleeding money”, and the prospect of finding a buyer was deemed “impossible right now.” Richards, who also DJs under the name Destructo, has been brought in to navigate the company through the restructuring process.
Avant Gardner’s financial obligations are staggering, totaling over $155 million in funded debt, in addition to millions owed in taxes and to various vendors. The company’s distress was significantly worsened by its inability to open the newly overhauled Brooklyn Mirage. The sprawling outdoor complex, a beacon for electronic music fans, was undergoing a major transformation, but the project was derailed by delays, cost overruns, and permitting issues. This led to the last-minute cancellation of its highly anticipated opening night.
While the Mirage is closed, Avant Gardner has secured financing to continue operating its other two venues, the Great Hall and Kings Hall, which are located in the same complex. Many shows originally scheduled for the Mirage have been moved to these indoor spaces.
The future of the Brooklyn Mirage remains uncertain. Although the company aims to stabilize its finances and hopes to bring the venue back for the 2026 season, no official reopening date has been set. The closure is a significant blow to New York City’s nightlife and the global electronic music community, which saw the venue as a cultural landmark. Fans who looked forward to experiencing the revamped space must now wait and see if the Mirage can rise from its current challenges.
