Doja Cat’s ‘Vie’ is Sexy, Chaotic, and THAT Girl

Welcome back, queen Doja!!!

When Scarlet dropped in 2023, it split the room. Some people (me included, a loyal Amala-era fan) thought it was bold and brilliant. Others dragged her with tired accusations of being “demonic” or “losing it.” That backlash says more about the way we box artists in than it does about Doja. In every other career, switching things up is expected. Why can’t musicians do the same without being crucified?

With Vie, Doja gives us the ultimate rebuke to all that noise. The album is lush, playful, chaotic, and tender—pulling threads from every era she’s lived through and weaving them into something that feels both familiar and entirely new.

What really makes Vie pop is her voice. Doja’s versatility is insane: she raps with bite, slips into melodies like butter, and layers harmonies that sound almost orchestral. She knows her voice is an instrument and plays it better than anyone else right now.

The tracklist is a trip through love in all its forms. On “Gorgeous,” she tackles the obsession with beauty standards and reminds us she’s always been real, even under the spotlight. “Take Me Dancing” with SZA is pure nostalgic glow, an ‘80s dream that feels like a wink back at their Kiss Me More magic. Songs like “Lipstain” and “Stranger” clap back at fans who tried to police her love life, while “Silly! Fun!” bursts with the carefree spirit that made Planet Her so addictive.

And here’s the thing: after all the flack she caught for Scarlet, about her look, her vibe, her attitude… Doja didn’t retreat. She doubled down. Vie is proof she’s still doing whatever the hell she wants, shaping her narrative, and choosing joy in the process. The whole record centers on love, not the cheesy Hallmark version but the real thing: messy, gorgeous, painful, thrilling. Even when she’s begging a partner to come back in the final track, she does it with groove and glitter.

If people can’t handle her joy, that’s their problem. Doja’s never asked for permission. She’s fun, flirty, and flipping the world off with a smile that says, “Don’t let your unhappiness ruin my vibe.”
