Game Time with TheFatRat: VR, Super Mario Land, Cyberpunk 2077 + More

Gaming Music icon TheFatRat, popularly known for his immense online following of over 5.6 million YouTube subscribers and extremely popular songs like ‘Unity’, ‘Monody’ and ‘Fly Away’ which have over 800 million streams combined, has finally released his highly-anticipated debut album PARALLAX.

TheFatRat said about the making of the PARALLAX album, “I have been collecting hundreds of instrumental track ideas over several years and used the last nine months to take the best ones and polish them. Then I invited some of my favorite singers and writers like Anjulie, Cecilia Gault and Riell for sessions. Due to the pandemic, it wasn’t possible to fly them to Germany, so me and my family traveled to Dubai and asked them to join us. It was great to live in one place because it’s less pressure when you write. Usually in a session I often feel like I have to finish a song 100%right away because once the session is over, it’s not that easy to get back into the studio with the writer or singer. But since we were living in the same house for weeks it was way more relaxed. We could switch back and forth between songs and rewrite ideas the next day.”

TheFatRat celebrates the release of his terrific album by joining us for our Game Time feature. He dives into a range of gaming related topics questions. Read below and explore TheFatRats’s history of gaming!

What is your favorite console, either current or from the past?

Super NES. Definitely the one I have the best memories with. When it came out and I played Super Mario World for the first time it simply blew my mind.

What’s your favourite game soundtrack?

That’s a tough one! There are so many good ones but my top three are Skyrim, Super Mario World and Minecraft.

Do you follow any pro-gamers, and which esports teams do you follow?

I have a couple of friends that work for E-Sports teams but I don’t feel attached to a specific team.

What music do you listen to while gaming?

Actually quite a lot of my own music. But also producers and acts like JJD, Geoplex and K/DA. I have a public Spotify playlist called “Ultimate Gaming Music” by the way which I put on often when playing competitive games.

What was the first video game you remember playing? Which device/console?

The first I played was Tetris on Game Boy. But only because it was in the package. The first game I bought was Super Mario Land. Still love it.

Do you watch any gaming streamers/youtubers?

Yes, I love to watch Super Mario Maker 2 let’s plays. Watching a skilled player play a creative level is so much fun. Some of my favourites are DGR, Ryukahr and Grand Poo Bear.

What do you think the biggest future gaming advancement will be?

In my opinion only a fraction of the potential that lies in VR has been realised so far. It’s only a matter of time until we have massive multiplayer worlds in VR with their own economy. Similar to how it’s portrayed Ready Player One.

What game do you think you’re best at overall?

Haven’t played R6S in a while but I’m a halfway decent player when I play on a regular basis.

If you had to live in the world of the last game you played, what world would it be?

Mario Golf Super Rush. Not sure if golfing for the rest of my life would be my thing but at least it’s not Resident Evil.

Which game soundtrack would you want to have your music in?

Either a Super Mario Game or the new Elder Scrolls.

What upcoming game releases are you most excited for?

I’ve been a Warhammer fan for over 20 years and played Total War since the first Shogun so I’m eagerly waiting for Total War: Warhammer III

What are your top 3 games ever and why?

– Rainbow Six Siege. Out of all competitive games, FPS are the ones that I’m kinda good at. I really love the strategic aspect of R6S and how it rewards team play.

– Super Mario Odyssey. I love it so much that I collected all 999 moons to squeeze every last bit of fun out of it.

– Cyberpunk 2077. I understand that people on current gen consoles have been heavily frustrated by the bugged release, but on PC it’s a fantastic game. Incredibly immersive and a true piece of art.

Console or PC?

For me it’s PC because I grew up on it. Playing an FPS with a controller would simply be impossible for me.

What are you playing at the moment?

I haven’t played a lot in the last couple of months because the album kept me really busy. But when I had some time with my daughter, we played Super Mario 3D world and recently Mario Golf Super Rush. Now that the album is finished I wanna go back to R6S.
