Now, we invited Jacob Colon to share his experience as a live performer, his beginnings DJing and which festivals are on his bucket list for the near future.

Hi Jacob Colon, how are you?

I’m doing really good. I’m happy about the recent success behind my latest drop ‘Higher’ and some other work I’m cooking up.

Do you remember your first live performance? Where was it and how did it go?

Yes, it was an afterhours party in Brooklyn NY. It was a pretty cool party up until it was shut down since the police were ready to show up lol. It was an underground type of party with an undisclosed location. The vibe was dope and I recall playing a lot of unreleased music that I made prior to the show that received great crowd reactions.

What’s your usual routine to get ready for a live show?

I always go through a list of promos and unreleased music to showcase alongside drum loops to complement and recreate the groove of the song.

What do you look for in a track to add it to a live set?

The bass always catches my attention first.

What’s your favorite thing about mixing live?

Recreating tracks on the spot.

Can you tell us what would you say it’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your time performing live?

Always have a game plan on how you will approach each track in your set. Mixing on the fly with no vision can create a lot of nervousness and kill your vibe.

What’s the funniest or most exciting story you have involving a live show?

On the funny side, I was warming up for the main DJ and when they came on the stage to start preparing for their set, they accidently kicked the power button on the power stripe and turned off all the power on the DJ table. Of course, the crowd went silent, but then started up a chant until we got everything situated.

Are there any new skills or gear would you like to incorporate in the near future? If so, which ones?

I want to put together a live set like Disclosure and incorporate live piano into my sets.

Which venue or festival would you like to perform at in the future?

Tomorrowland is the big one I’d like to play at and definitely Coachella.

What piece of advice would you give to a DJ that’s starting their live performance journey?

Stay true to your sound and perfect it.
