Emerging dark pop musician Gilska reflects on chasing fleeting highs and the numbing lows that comes after, on moody house track “Up Till 5,” led by her husky vocals and a melancholic soundscape.
With textured synths and beats crafting a groovy yet mysterious vibe, the London-born, Sri Lankan-origin builds up the electro-tinged track with layers of delicate instrumentals and contemplative song writing.
Speaking of the track, which came to life as a simple number written on piano, Gilska says: “It’s almost like being stuck in a loophole of ending up in the club night after night not knowing why. Having a slight addiction to partying to get that dopamine rush to feel something, but slowly realising night after night it’s not working. How the lights, the drinks, and even the music sucks you in and you always end up feeling that same numbness after a temporary high but you keep on dancing anyway.”
Music runs in Gilska’s blood, with a grandfather who enjoyed a successful pop career in Sri Lanka. Honing a powerful combination of natural talent and classical training, Gilska who began composing melodies at the age of nine cements a space for herself with her edgy yet soulful pop with each intoxicating release.
