Louis Futon, Dominic Lalli from Big Gigantic, & More in “Pass The Beat” Twitter Challenge

The pandemic pushed artists into their homes and out of their comfort zones, but with it came opportunity for creation and invention. Artists began using social media in different, more personal ways to connect with fans and each other.

At the beginning of quarantine, an emerging producer tweeted beatsmith and multi-instrumentalist Ian Ewing to add some drums to his beat– thus “Twitter Telephone” was born. Ewing then tagged the “hi-fi funk lord” Birocratic who then passed it onto their Chillhop label mate Cloudchord for some guitar and lap steel riffs.

Next on the line was electronic hip-hop and R&B producer Louis Futon tagging in Martin Vogt (Haywyre) for his master piano skills. Vogt looped in Dominic Lalli of Big Gigantic to finish off with the track some sultry sax.

“Twitter Telephone” transformed from a single beat into an ambient, lo-fi dream right before our eyes infusing the seven artists’ individual styles of hip-hop, house and soul. The musical experiment is a testimony to the silver linings of our new, socially-distanced reality and the newfound spark of collaboration it’s created.

“Twitter Telephone” is available now on all streaming platforms.
