If you’re within the vicinity of the Netherlands between 16th – 18th of August, you don’t want to miss the chance to check out Iconic Lowlands Festival. Since the turn of the millennium, Lowlands has helped shape and reflect popular underground music for the region, from blockbuster headliners to catching acts on their way up.
Situated in the small village of Biddinghuizen, Lowlands is a true music and arts festival, with sculptures, installations and performance art on display at all times. With a headline roster to rival the biggest events, it’s amazing that Music is only one of the categories on the programme.
Last year we attended and were blown away by the experience, with art in all forms and headliners such as Dua Lipa, Gorillaz, N.E.R.D, and Kendrick Lamar it was truly an unforgettable weekend. Some of our highlights included Bonobo, Zhu, San Holo, Mr. Carmack, Jarreau Vandal, Yaeji, Maribou State, George Fitzgerald (Live) and Sophie – you can watch the after video for 2018 below and read our recap here.
This year they’ve gone all out with headliners such as Tame Impala, Twenty One Pilots, De Staat, A$AP Rocky, Anderson Paak & The Free Nationals, The National, New Order, Royal Blood, Anne-Marie, Bear’s Den, Billie Eilish, Franz Ferdinand, Giorgio Moroder, The Good, The Bad & The Queen, James Blake, Jon Hopkins and many more.
With so much to offer and for a little bit of downtime, you can also experience comedy, theatre, dance, literature, philosophy and event arthouse cinema. You could theoretically go to Lowlands and have a fulfilling weekend without seeing any bands, but it’s definitely not advised.
There’s a rule at Lowlands and that’s once you’re in, you’re in — it’s an inclusive party to let off steam for four days. You can’t buy day tickets, so when you get your wristband and walk through the gates on Thursday you’re there with everyone for the long haul until Monday morning — no giddy fresh faces gatecrashing on Sunday and taking over.
