MORTEN Interview: Future Rave Tour, Living In Miami, Hardwell’s Return + More

MORTEN has been taking over the industry over the past few years with his innovative new ‘Future Rave’ sound together with good friend David Guetta, inspiring DJs worldwide and creating an entirely new culture. He has gathered an audience of 4.7M monthly listeners on Spotify alone, releasing hit after hit with the Guetta-collab being on top 5 of the most played records in the world by DJ’s for 7 weeks. With a residency at Hï Ibiza this summer, and shows on the mainstages of EDC Las Vegas and Tomorrowland, MORTEN does not need to assert his spot anymore. His ability to transform his music between melodic, captivating vocals and his well known, recognized snare and bass heavy drops set him apart from most artists.

MORTEN and Guetta recently revealed their future rave residency at Hï Ibiza. The duo will kick off the 18-week Friday residency at the club on 3rd June 3rd, and continue until 30th September.

We sat down with MORTEN during Miami music week, dive in below to hear what was discussed!

Where are you from originally?

I’m from Copenhagen, Denmark. A city called Aarhus.

I sat next to a guy from Copenhagen on my flight here. I didn’t know you were from there at the time, but I bet if I told him he would have freaked out that I was going to meet you.

I mean, yeah, you know, people from Scandinavia are very chill and like, very unimpressed.

Yeah, I’ve heard that in general about Europeans.

Yeah. It’s a bit of more of a laid back culture.

Tell me about your experiences with Ultra prior to today. How many times have you been here before? Any highlights from the past?

I’ve been coming to Miami and attending Miami music week for the last I would say 15 years. I’ve been coming here for many years. Playing the pool parties and I also played at the worldwide stage before. I’ve also been joining David Guetta as my friend back stage. So yeah, I’m very, very excited to see what’s going to be to happen. Ultra being back to its original location, living in Miami I can tell the city is very excited.

How long have you been living in Miami?

For two years now.

Are you back and forth between Europe and Miami?

So in the summer I’m six months in Europe and in the winter, I’m mostly in Asia, North America and South America.

Are you teasing any new music this week?

Yeah, we have a lot of stuff that we’ve been working on and right now we’re trying to figure out if we will have a Future Rave show tomorrow at Story. They might cancel it because of the curfew but we will know later today if it’s canceled. It looks like it’s getting canceled, unfortunately.

Do you have other shows planned this week?

No that was it.

So you have several dates this year for your Future Rave tour?

Yeah. We have four shows in USA. The first one that was supposed to happen here in Miami. Then we have a Los Angeles – Exchange. We have EDC in Las Vegas and we have Broken Mirage in Brooklyn, New York.

Who are you looking forward to seeing this weekend? Any other artists?

So it seems like we all know that Hardwell is gonna do an unannounced show and it’s gonna be cool to see him come back – what he brings to the scene, you know, he hasn’t been here for four years and it seems like the sound has changed a little bit. Maybe it comes back to where it was before him. I don’t know. I think for me personally, I’m very happy with the sound that David and I have developed. So I think we’re gonna look a lot at what’s happening in the scene and I’m just excited to see what people are going to bring to the table. It is always cool to see new music and how the crowd reacts to it.

Do you have any friends that you’re going to see this weekend that you haven’t seen a while?

Yeah lots of friends. My brother came in and I have a lot of friends here. So yeah, I’m excited!
