UK Based Nonprofit Takes On Mental Health In The Music Industry

Mental health is all too often treated as a taboo subject, especially in the music industry.  Mental health issues have hit the music world hard, with the recent loss of legends like Chester Bennington and Avicii to suicide.  To combat mental illnesses’s devastating affect on the industry, non-profit Help Musicians UK has launched a mental health helpline.  The line, part of the recently launched “Music Minds Matter” campaign, is meant for all music industry workers in need of mental health related help or advice.  The line isn’t just limited to musicians, it’s also meant to help tour crew, managers, label professionals, mixers / masterers and anyone else working in the industry.  Since launching the help line over a year ago, Help Musicians UK has assisted people from every aspect of the industry.

The helpline can be reached at 0808 802 8008, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Recent studies suggest that those affiliated with the music industry are affected by mental illness at a higher rate than others.  A 2016 study by the University of Westminster found that 71% of the 2,211 musicians surveyed had experienced  panic attacks and/or high levels of anxiety, and 68% reported experiencing depression.  Possibly more troubling is the survey’s finding that of those who said they experienced mental health issues, only 30% said they had sought help.  Organizations like Help Musicians UK are looking to change that, by encouraging those working as musicians or in the industry to reach out for help.
