Review: Thunderbolts* Is A Return To Form For Marvel

After a bit of a rocky few years for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thunderbolts* arrives as a refreshing and much-needed step in the right direction. While the studio has struggled to consistently land solo projects in its recent phases, team-up films seem to be their secret weapon, and Thunderbolts* continues that trend. It’s not just another superhero flick; it’s a gritty, emotionally intelligent story that brings new energy to the MCU.

The film focuses on a team of anti-heroes and broken figures, many of whom are grappling with deep trauma, guilt, and moral ambiguity. Instead of shying away from these darker themes, Thunderbolts* leans into them, most notably in its thoughtful exploration of mental health. Depression, loss, and the weight of past actions are addressed in an unflinching yet respectful way, and it gives the characters a depth that elevates the story beyond standard blockbuster fare.

Although the film moves quickly and mainly revolves around just two major action set pieces, it never feels undercooked. In fact, the streamlined pacing and focus on character development help maintain a strong emotional core.

One of the most surprising strengths of Thunderbolts* lies in its resolution. Normally, there’s nothing more frustrating than a final showdown that gets resolved through a heart-to-heart conversation. It can feel lazy, even childish; especially in a universe filled with cosmic threats and super soldiers. But in this case, it works. The emotional confrontation that drives the climax feels earned, authentic, and mature. Rather than undermining the stakes, it reinforces the humanity of these characters and their complicated inner battles.

Then there’s Sentry, the MCU’s latest powerhouse and potentially its most overpowered addition yet. His presence alone is enough to shift the balance of the universe, and the way he’s introduced here is chilling and exciting. Knowing he’s set to go up against Doctor Doom in the next Avengers instalment adds even more anticipation for what’s to come. The seeds planted here promise major payoffs in the near future.

All in all, Thunderbolts* is a great movie. A reminder of what Marvel can do, especially when leaning into good character driven storytelling. While it’s not the most impactful or explosive movie in the 36! movie franchise, it’s a good time and a must-watch for action movie, comic book fans.
