Review: Vagabond, High Stakes & Frustrating Twists

As my first foray into Korean television besides Squid Game, Vagabond proved to be a solid introduction to the genre. Offering a mix of thrilling action, intrigue, and high-stakes drama – the show is undeniably entertaining, with slick visuals (sometimes), intense action sequences, and a plot full of twists and turns that keep you hooked – for a while.

Vagabond has that perfect blend of espionage and suspense that draws you in. The chemistry between the leads, played by Lee Seung-gi and Bae Suzy, is palpable, but not drawn out. The high-stakes world of covert operations, political intrigue, and a tragic plane crash sets the stage for a gripping ride. A lot happens through the series, but at the same time, the story doesn’t advance as much as one would like.

The show isn’t without its flaws. As much as it keeps you on your toes, some of the twists start to feel predictable and exhausting. By the time certain reveals hit, it’s less “wow” and more “here we go again.” The writing, though not terrible, could have been tighter and more inventive; there’s a lot of recycled drama that detracts from the potential of the story.

While Vagabond does a decent job of wrapping up most of the storylines, it takes a turn towards the end with a new plotline and twists that felt it was over the top, and takes away the resolution that watchers had wanted for 10+ episodes. This new thread seems like it’s setting up for more, but with no season two on the horizon, it ends up feeling unfinished and frustrating.

In the end, Vagabond is a fun, high-energy series that shows promise but ultimately falls short of greatness. The 16 episodes would have been better presented in 10. It’s enjoyable while it lasts, but the predictable plot twists and unresolved ending keep it from being the perfect thriller. If you’re looking for something fast-paced and entertaining, Vagabond delivers, but be prepared for some frustration along the way.
