Remix Radar 004: Featuring NGHTMRE, Arman van Buuren, and Weiss

The fourth edition of CULTR’s Remix Radar is here to brighten your week and give your eardrums a nice, warm embrace with delicious beats.

Oliver Tree - Hurt (NGHTMRE Remix)

NGHTMRE unleashes the perfect chill with his ice-dripped remix of Oliver Tree’s “Hurt”. The rising star, fresh off a Coachella and an EDC performance, injects vibe-y-ness straight to the veins of Oliver' Tree’s growling rawness. The culmination is a satisfying breathe into dance music.

Van Halen - Jump (Armin van Buuren Remix)

I did not expect to ever hear a remix of Van Halen. Fortunately for us, Armin van Buuren was entrusted to remix “Jump”. The legend keeps the original’s spirit and energy while adding an electronic bite. Perfect for introducing your parents to dance music.

Netsky - Iron Heart (Nu:Logic Remix)

Nu:Logic serve up a dazzling re-birth to Netsky’s “Iron Heart”. The remix originally made noise a few months prior when it was released by Record Day Store in vinyl exclusive form. The remix comes from legends of DnB, Dan Gresham (Nu:Tone) and Matt Gresham (Logistics) and is a space-y DnB morsel.

MEDUZA - Piece Of Your Heart Ft. Goodboys (Weiss Remix)

Weiss has made quite the stir in the last year with the ultra successful, “Feel My Needs” and his collaboration with Becky Hill, “I Could Get Used To This” on Universal. It’s safe to say Weiss is becoming a house sensation. He remains in our minds with his piano laden remix of smash hit “Piece Of Your Heart” by MEDUZA.

LSD - No New Friends (Dombresky Remix)

Diplo can do no wrong. His collaboration with SIA and Labrinth has proven to be another successful artistic venture with their acid-tinge dance-pop. For their latest remix pack, they employ the French maestro, Dombresky, to instill the heaters and transform “No New Friends” into a fiery, sweat-drenched house tune. Another masterful track by Dombresky.

Sofi Tukker - Fantasy (Nora En Pure Remix)

Nora En Pure entrances with her own fantasy on Sofi Tukker’s latest remix of “Fantasy”. The South African legend strikes all the right chords and creates an ethereal experience for listeners transporting them on a journey through Avatar’s Pandora.

Stanton Warriors Ft. Sian Evans - Up2U (Rene Lavice Jungle Remix)

Rene Lavice provides a cosmic, spiritual ride through his jungle and DnB remix of Stanton Warriors’ “Up2U”. Sian Evans’ soulful vocals flourish among Rene’s dirty beats. The remix is in lead up to Stanton Warriors upcoming album, Rise, out May 31st, thus ending their four-year absence. The excitement is definitely boiling.

Klingande Ft. Jamie N Commons - By The River (Tuff London Remix)

Tuff London has created the dopest remix of a Klingande track to ever grace the Earth. The British duo mystified with a raw and tribal remix of “By The River”. I won’t spoil anymore of the fun. It’s amazing. GO LISTEN.

Karl X Johan - Get It All (Bam Spacey Remix)

Deep from the depths of my vault I found a downtempo gem. Bam Spacey provide the remix of “Get It All” by Karl X Johan. Both artists lay relatively dormant and it doesn’t appear that either have new music on the horizon. It’s a shame because this remix is a beautiful, melancholy-inspired downtempo track and I only wonder what other musical offerings Bam Spacey and Karl X Johan could conjure.

Watch Diplo Arrive By Parachute For DJ Set In Baltimore

Diplo’s creative antics have seen him do some out of the box things over the years, wether it be launching a parody show about himself or his idea to remix his Mad Decent catalogue into Christmas songs.

However this past weekend ahead of his EDC he had one more show and went a little bit more extreme than usual, opting to jump out of a plane at 8,500 feet landing backstage shortly before running on to play his set.

Diplo was performing at the event in Baltimore for the 144th Preakness Stakes horse race and was joined at the event by an all star bill including Kygo, Fisher, Frank Walker and hip-hop icons Logic, and Juice WRLD as well as Robin Thicke and more.

Lil Nas X Drops Official Movie For Viral Track “Old Town Road”

Over five months since its initial release, Lil Nas X has released the official video for his viral track “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus.  The video, which classifies itself as a “movie”, was uploaded to Youtube on the 17th.  Since then, it’s amassed tens of millions of views, and reached the number one trending spot on the platform.

The video opens with Cyrus and Lil Nas X in a wild west setting dated 1889.  The pair appear to have successfully robbed a bank, and are hiding out.  Soon, they’re found and shot at, but Lil Nas X escapes through a tunnel that leads him to the modern day.  The rest of the video shows Lil Nas X roaming around on his horse, running into countless celebrities on the way including Diplo, Chris Rock and Vince Staples.

The original version of the track shot to the top of the country charts following its viral success on video sharing app Tik-Tok, but was later removed because it was deemed “not country enough” by Billboard.  The controversial ruling led country legend Billy Ray Cyrus to collaborate on a remixed version, which has since gained massive success.  The western themed video for the song is out now on Lil Nas X’s official Youtube.

Remix Radar 002: Diplo, A-Trak, Yolanda Be Cool & More

Week 2 of our Remix Radar is here to spice up your Tuesday with some tail-wagging tunes! We had quite a few releases this week from some of dance music’s heavy-hitters. This includes, of course, Diplo’s dipped toe into country music—an “Old Town Road” remix leapfrogging off the original viral sensation and into the front of your weekly playlists. Alongside such monoliths, we’ve also uncovered some hidden gems. There are a few rising acts, as well as a rediscovery from the vault—an early masterpiece from an Australian act who’s making major waves in the industry right now.

Lil Nas X - Old Town Road (Billy Ray Cyrus and Diplo Remix)

Have you noticed that they add a horse to the ‘Old Town Road’ artwork each time a new version is released? We’re up to three horses with Diplo’s drum n bass laden take of the viral hit. It was originally released a week ago in conjunction with Diplo’s closing set at Stagecoach Festival where the superstar DJ was joined on stage by Lil Nas X and Bill Ray Cyrus. Diplo has promised more country-inspired music in addition to this remix and his single with Cam. We are very curious to see what Diplo has up his sleeve.

Axwell - Nobody Else (A-Trak Remix)

The MVP of the decks, A-Trak serves up a delicious take of Axwell’s ‘Nobody Else’. A-Trak infuses the original with funky brass work, shimmering piano chords, and wobbly undertones transforming ‘Nobody Else’ into a soulful house jam. Not the right track for powerlifting, but perfect for sipping Coronas on a yacht.

Purple Disco Machine - Body Funk (Yolanda Be Cool Remix)

Purple Disco Machine has been a revelation to house music with his disco-tronic and funk-dripping tunes. He burst onto the scene with his interpolation of Sylvester's 'Do You Wanna Funk' and Hot Streak's 'Body Work', better known as ‘Body Funk’. It became a massive, massive club hit and was one of the most played tracks of Ibiza’s 2017 summer. He recently re-released the hit with new edits and a star-studded remix pack featuring Carl Cox, Claptone, Dom Dolla, and concluded it with Yolanda Be Cool. The Australians elevate ‘Body Funk’ with a spicy piano melody and a hypnotic vocal chop. Yolanda Be Cool does right by the original.

I also suggest giving a listen to the other remixes. They’re all really cool in their own right.

Felix Cartal ft. Lights - Love Me (Felix Cartal’s Chill Mix)

Felix Cartal teamed up with fellow-Canadian, Lights, unleashing a glittering dance bop onto the world known as, 'Love Me'. The song has served as a festival anthem being belted out by dance music lovers from South America to Asia and back again. Cartal offers his new take on 'Love Me' with his Chill Mix. Cartal peals back his production simplifying the instrumental into a delectable, rhythmic beat and an enchantingly soft piano melody that surrounds a distorted version of Lights' vocals. The culmination is an impactful bundle of emotion that will invoke "the feels".

Spada - Hear Me Now (Ferreck Dawn Remix)

Ferreck Dawn has been around the club scene for over 16 years. In that time, He’s served up some juicy club mainstays and made appearances at many of Europe’s top Clubs and festivals including Ministry of Sound, Tomorrowland, and Creamfields. Dawn provides the prelude to Spada’s ‘Hear Me Now’ with a deep house cut that has a dark, yet beautiful sound design with a crooning vocal and an enchanting guitar melody.

Spada has not released the original of ‘Hear Me Now’ and instead is spotlighting his new track via Ferreck Dawn’s remix and soon-to-be released remix by Moscoman (May 10) with the original following. Give Ferreck Dawn’s take a gander in the run-up to the original.

Sigma (feat.Louisa) - here we go again (Just Kiddin edit)

British duo, Just Kiddin, provides a transformative remix of Sigma’s ‘Here We Go Again’. The original is a commercial dance track that is focused around Louisa’s anthemic vocal, perfect for a festival DJ set. ‘Here We Go Again’ goes through a metamorphsis at the hands of Just Kiddin and unleash an energetic, up-beat dance track that is full of uplifting, happy vibes. It’s easy to envision oneself dancing with a special someone as confetti flies and jubilation consumes the dance floor.

Jorn Van Deynhoven - We Can Fly (Cold blue Remix)

Fast-rising Trance producer, Cold Blue, provides an ethereal take on ‘We Can Fly’ by Jorn Van Deynhhoven. Cold Blue weaves a cosmic chord progression that transplants listeners deep in the depths of space, on a journey across the Andromeda Galaxy. The remix is a nice entry into the trance world.

DONT BLINK - GET DOWN (Jamie Roy & Jay de Lys Remix)

Jamie Roy and Jay de Lys team-up to construct an imaginative tech-house remix for DONT BLINK. The newcomers provide a fresh take of ‘Get Down’ utilizing dynamic sound bytes, inventive synth progression, and bass driven funk that gives the remix a quirky, yet delightful vibe. I recommend this to fans of Claud VonStroke and the Dirtybird crew.

Miss Velvet - Cincinnati Street (PNAU Remix)

Today I bring you an absolute monster of a track from the vault. PNAU has been making quite the name for themselves with highly successful tracks: ‘Changes’, ‘Go Bang’, and ‘Chameleon'. Before these hits, the Australian trio released a remix of, relatively unknown artist, Miss Velvet’s ‘Cincinnati Street’. The remix is very different from what we hear from PNAU currently. It’s more raw and rowdy vs. pretty and upbeat. Even so, there is still a very clear PNAU feel with tribal beats and jungle vibes. I would love to hear PNAU release more raw sounds like this remix.

Diplo's "Higher Ground EP" Arrives Including Tove Lo, Kah-lo and Blond:ish.

Diplo isnt slowing down anytime soon. Having shocked all sides of the industry with his surprise country-esque inspired "So Long" with Benny Cam followed by a performance at stagecoach festival just last week, Diplo now leaves the ranch to jump back into club serving up the remainder of his "Higher Ground EP".

Intiially announced with the release of the silky deep house crossover "Hold You Tight" and B-side “Bubblegum" back in March, the new additions include the Tove Lo featuring "Win Win" and "Give Dem" with Blondi:ish featuring Kah-lo making for a jacking EP made for late night rinsing in the dark sweaty club rooms across the globe.

Taking a lead from his Mark Ronson joint project ‘Silk City’, the ‘Higher Ground EP’ sees Diplo push himself into a club focused UK sound with a late night underground tonality. The pairing of Tove Lo, over a dark brooding house production is a suprising move but it without a doubt goes down a treat. Meanwhile "Give Dem" has an instant jacking energy, and Kah-lo's iconic vocals will no doubt have fans singing a long with her unique and catchy rhymes.

Remix Rewind - Don Diablo, Blanke, Garmiani & More

Presenting you with the best remixes that have been unleashed on us over the past couple of weeks that are worth a rewind. Kicking it off Musical Freedom bring double trouble with a huge new remix of Quintino & Sandro Silva's 2014 hit 'Epic' from Garmiani released today, and then a thumping remix of Kura's 'Lambo' from mix-master Laidback Luke. Following that we have a roaring new mix of Diplo and MØ's 'Sun In Our Eyes' from Don Diablo, JYYE's remix of 'Comfortable' from Australian rising singer Rachel Constanzo, and rounding it out is Blanke's take of 'Space' from Prince Fox which is out now through Dim Mak.

Diplo & Mark Ronson Team Up with Dua Lipa on Electricity

When Diplo & Mark Ronson announced their joint project Silk City we knew we'd be seeing some exciting collaborations from the duo. Now after having the strongest run on global charts with her Calvin Harris feature 'One-Kiss' and her outstanding debut album, Dua Lipa joins the supergroup on 90's vibed house tune "Electricity". We were hinted at the collab early on in the announcement of the Silk City launch and we are oh so glad it has arrived. Check out the song and video below!

It was recorded in November last year before her meteoric rise and global chart domination, once again proving Diplo's undeniably skilled ear for finding pop potential. Silk City's impressive beginning has to date included collaborations with Goldlink & Desiigner on "Gold', Mapei on 'Feel About You' and Daniel Merriweather on the debut single 'Only Can Get Better'.

Diplo Talks Life, Travel And How He Got His Start
Screenshot 2018-06-28 16.33.16.png

We all know his songs, have seen him play but Diplo recently sat down with the Oxford Union while on tour in the UK and gave an interesting insight into his early days that you've never heard before. He also fields questions from the attendees in a Q&A session discussing both the business and creative side of music.

The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

The Many Faces Of Diplo

Diplo continues to dominate music in 2018 like no other. On top of a highly succesfull EP featuring the likes of MØ, Santigold, Desiigner and Trippie Red, he's also added two more artist projects including LSD with Sia & Labrinth and "Silk City" his newest project with Mark Ronson.

Fader labeled Diplo "pop music's problem child" and you know what, we find it hard to disagree. The producer, all round creator and Mad Decent label head is a brand genius that has transcended genres, platforms and borders doing whatever he wants.

His musical breakouts include "Express Yourself","Where Are Ü Now" as Jack Ü ft. Justin Bieber" and of course 'Lean On" with DJ Snake ft.  as Major Lazer that has surpassed a billion streams.

His diverse range of collaborators show his willingnes to expirement and surface new talent from all over the globe where he tours. Among them are names like Die Antwoord, J Balvin, Madonna, Shakira, Beyoncé, No Doubt, Usher, Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, CL, Tiesto, Don Diablo, Laidback Luke, Dillon Francis, Mike Posner, Boaz Van Da Beatz,  Starrah, French Montana and Lil Pump.

But one could argue it his nack for finding forward thinking eclectic sounds and producers and bringing them together that has kept him to forefront of music for at least the past decade. Coupled with his long reign of the Diplo & Friends show on BBC Radio 1 and his recently launch metoric Revoloution Radio on Sirus XM he's hosted festivals in Pakistan and partnered with brands such as Bacardí, Google, Deadpool and more.

He recently allowed James Van Der Baek to parody his life as a DJ in "What Would Diplo Do" which was accompanied by still ongoing parady Twtter that has had some internet beefs of its own.  Despite his succes Diplo as he says didnt intend to become one of the scenes icons "it just happened", and while he may not have meant to he is increasingly using his platform to educate and put out his own flavour worldwide.

Now teaming up with "Uptown Funk" producer Mark Ronson with the addition of a club orientated "Silk City" he is only set to continue his  blending of dance culture, the duo launched their first single "Only Can Get Better" featuring Daniel Merriweather. with a premiere on BBC Radio 1 and an essential mix the following day and have reveleaed there will be a new song with Dua Lipa - who's now had the longest running UK #1 in history with her Calvin Harris collab "One Kiss".

Welcome To The Party - Diplo, French Montana, Lil Pump, Zhavia
Screenshot 2018-05-23 09.01.21.png

If you're yet to see Deadpool 2, go do it this weekend. For now though we'll tell you that the second edition of Ryan Reynolds comedic hit "Deadpool" has recruited Diplo's no f*&k's given approach to help add to the score, catch the result in the video for "Welcome To The Party". You'll spot Diplo eating an ice cream while free-falling out of a plane and proving yet again that white people can't dance. Diplo aligns perfectly with the Deadpool brand and even though he's said he did it for the money the tracks is a vibe. Contrasting features from French, Pump and Zhavia blend well underpinned by eclectic thumping production.
