Remix Radar 003: Featuring Odesza, Paul Woolford, and Mihalis Safras

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I proudly bring you Remix Radar 003. Last week was a smorgasbord of remix offerings from all-star producer/DJs with the likes of Diplo and A-Trak serving up massive tunes. This week I am dubbing it the ‘Rise of the Unknowns’. Only a couple artists contained within have touring artist status. In other words, the artists featured are still growing and haven’t hit their peaks. Hopefully, this Remix Radar shines a light on a new artist for you to stan. Without further ado, Remix Radar 003.

Hot Chip - Hungry Child (Paul Woolford Sunrise mix)

‘Hungry Child’ is Hot Chip’s latest offering—a dance tune radiating the playful euphoria for which these indie darlings are known. And now, they’ve presented a bold yet controlled rework of the track from the deft touch of living legend Paul Woolford. The result is a prime cut of minimal piano house that’s sure to nourish the soul on a summer night.

Claptone ft. TENDER - Stay the Night (Mihalis Safras Remix)

Claptone employs Greek, tech-house aficionado, Mihalis Safras, to provide a sizzling remix for the fifth and final part of the ‘Fantast’ Remixes. The award-winning producer flips ‘Stay The Night’ into a playful, yet roaring track full of gooey vibes that we’ve come to expect from Mihalis. This a perfect track to awake a party.

If you haven’t already, give the entire ‘Fantast’ Remix Pack a listen. There are quite a few gems.

Yotto - Hyperfall (Remixed)

I am already breaking the rather arbitrary rules I set at the start (sorry!) and I am including the entire remix pack for Yotto’s ‘Hyperfall’. It was too hard to pick a single remix to include in this week’s Remix Radar because each and every remix offers something new, refreshing, and exciting to Yotto’s discography, as well as, dance music as a whole. Shout out to Anja Schneider, Kevin de Vries, Monkey Safari, Cholé, Ruede Hagelstein, and SØNIN for creating an exquisite remix pack.

Example - All Night (Sam Bird Remix)

Sam Bird, a newcomer to the scene, serves up a sizzling remix of Example’s ‘All Night’. The burgeoning producer keeps the relative house, shoe-gazing vibe from the original, but adds spicy bass oscillations to raise the overall energy. Sam’s remix feels designed for a dark, grimy club devoid of neon and lasers.

Flux Pavilion Ft. Layna- Symphony (GLD Remix)

It takes pure, unfiltered talent to provide a stellar facelift to a legend of the game’s work. Fairly new to the scene, GLD, does just that and provides a glistening dubstep remix of Flux Pavilion’s ‘Symphony’ featuring Layna. The duo rework ‘Symphony’ with riot-inducing womps and screeching guitar chords that add a new layer of energy. This remix is destined to appear in many bass and dubstep DJ sets.

Todd Terry - Bounce To the Beat (Steve Lawler’s 3.1 Elements Remix)

Todd Terry did not earn the monicker “Todd The God” by chance. The man is a titan of house music. He is a big reason why we have electronic music as we know it today and he deserves our adoration and respect. This past Friday, “Todd The God” re-released his hit ‘Bounce to the Beat” that includes a remaster of the original plus two Steve Lawler remixes. The whole offering is tantalizing, but in particular, I thoroughly enjoyed Steve Lawler’s 3.1 Elements Remix. Give the whole package a listen. Todd deserves it.

ONE FROM THE VAULT

RAC - We Belong Together ft. Katie Herzig (Odesza Remix)

This week’s Remix Radar has been all about star artists bringing forth relatively unknowns with remixes. In honor of this, I present one of the first remixes done by - now legends - Odesza. EASILY, one of my top 5 played songs of 2015. This song is perfection. It’s as if the synths and delicate percussions is wrapping its web of euphoria around my soul making everything great on a cloudy day. One can see why Odesza are superstars in 2019.

Foreign Family Label-Mates MEMBA And EVAN GIAA Link Up On "Walls Down"

In an epic week of new music, today we discovered NY-based production duo MEMBA aka Ishaan Chaudhary and Will Curry are back with a new record featuring EVAN GIIA via ODESZA’s imprint Foreign Family. The two artists have been frequent collaborators which means they both understand the vision for each others projects when they make music and that always seems to lead to something special.

MEMBA in their own right are innovative instrumentalists known for creating multi-sensory experiences that take listeners on a trip that goes beyond sonic waves. Together with label-mate EVAN GIIA on “Walls Down” they wrote a bass winding single and on it the trio takes a deeper dive into their darker sounds, exploring uncharted territory in a tune that showcases their unconventional approach to breaking through today’s electronic music landscape.

On the story behind the collaboration MEMBA note "Walls Down took us a while because we wrote it twice - initially it was much faster. We showed it to EVAN GIIA and she immediately understood the direction of the song. She wrote the lyrics and recorded the final version in a few hours… in her bathroom. We usually re-track but there was this sauce in the original delivery that we just loved. Months passed and it didn’t really hit for us production wise, so we decided to V2 it. We started the entire thing from scratch and were possessed to write the version you hear today. We are super glad we were patient with this one. It feels so right now."

EVAN GIIA is an innovative artists and delivers a funky yet sophisticated vocal sound, she has quickly found an audience as success as a solo artist, and having entering into music as a classically trained opera singer it adds a unique touch to her alt-pop sound. Amassing millions of streams across releases such as “WESTWORLD”, “Pull Up” and Her latest hit "I Don't Like Ur Friends" she has received support from BBC Radio 1 and a coveted #1 spot on HypeMachine.

“Walls Down” is taken from MEMBA’s forthcoming audiovisual EP titled SAGA-II, which is set for release in summer 2019 via Foreign Family Collective and includes 7 tracks. The track has already become a crowd favourite across their impressive live performances this year and that is no small statement given they have graced the stage at Coachella, Ultra Music Festival, Sundara, and soon, Splash House and Elements Festival.

Sasha Sloan Shows Her Maturity On "Older" Ahead Of New EP
SashaSloanOlder.png

If you have not heard of the rising phenomena of Sasha Sloan, get used to the name because we’re making a bet you’ll hear her on repeat for years to come. Sloan’s new single “Older” which arrived on Friday is heartfelt note for the many that dealt with a difficult home as a child. Her new body of works appears to be inspired by a journey of self-discovery and her infectiously catchy lyrics are relatable anthems for the heartbroken and broken across the globe.

Sasha only truly shaped into an Artist in her own-right just last year with the release of her stellar debut “Ready Yet” which was followed by her EP “Sad Girls” which led to her signing to Sony’s RCA imprint, her songwriting to date has awarded her with more than 1 billion plays and nearly 250 million streams that feature herself on the mic.

First appearing on Kaskade’s album “Automatic” in 2015, the industry seemingly quickly took notice of her raw and undeniable talent. She went on to land a feature on ODESZA’s iconic album “A Moment A Part” with ‘Falls’, and she worked with Kygo on his “Stargazing” EP with ‘This Town’ and a remix of ‘Kids In Love’. She was meanwhile recruited to help co-write with Camila Cabello (‘Never Be the Same’), Kungs/Stargate (‘Be Right Here’), Tinashe/Future (‘Faded Love’), Louis Tomlinson (‘Just Hold On’),  Maggie Lindemann (‘Pretty Girl’) and album releases from NAO and LANY.

A post from her announcing her new release states “ [I] wrote Older in a hotel room in Germany after crushing some KFC and I def cried once it was finished lol”, we can all relate to the emotions that get brought up when you finish off a good box of chicken in a place where fried chicken isn’t really on the standard menu.

So go ahead and stream “Older” below. Keep an ear out for her second EP which is due out November 16 through RCA, and will include recent singles ‘Chasing Parties’, ‘Faking It’ and more new music. If you’re based in Los Angeles or New York tickets are available to catch her live later this year, though her first night in Los Angeles has already sold out so be quick!

ODESZA Reward 'Loyal' Fans With This Highly Anticipated Song
Loyal-ODESZA.png

If you have been fortunate enough to catch Seattle duo ODESZA perform live over the past few years, not only should you consider yourself lucky but there is also a high chance you have heard this song before.

Initially appearing in 2015, the bass weapon became a secret gem for their shows that was introduced to many as an encore. The high energy trap horns on ‘Loyal’ hit harder than their most well known productions and as a result it continued to catch many fans off guard, generating a lot of hype over the years.

The initial version was thought of as a remix of Alex Adair’s “Make Me Feel Better” due to the use of the tracks iconic vocal sample, but it was in-fact created as an original song. The official release is without the iconic sample and some have suggested they tried to get the clearance and weren’t able to reach an agreement.

Many fans never thought we’d see an official release after all this time, so for die hard ODESZA fans you could say this one is a treat from the duo for being ‘Loyal’.
