Los Angeles

California

The mad thing is I wasn’t originally the biggest fan of LA but I’ve fallen in love with it more and more over the years. The restaurants are incredible and if you’re lucky & get an offer to party at someone’s house in the hills, then take it!!

Ibiza

Spain

It’s always a No.1 go to place for me to party with my friends during the summer. Not only is the nightlife amazing but Old Town is a real mix of old & new with a chilled atmosphere and beautiful restaurants.

Barbados

Carribbean

Barbados has a special place in my heart: I went there as a kid and love the beaches & crystal clear water. Waking up in the morning and finding yourself surrounded by red crabs and swiminning with the turtles is a memory I’ll never forget.

Ferry Corsten Releases The Latest UNITY Collaboration with BT on ‘1997’

0

Ferry Corsten is back with his latest ‘Unity’ collaboration, after releasing the last one with Ilan Bluestone back in December – Ferry has teamed up with BT for a special collaboration in ‘1997‘.

Ferry Corsten has been busy with solo music in the first half of 2019, releasing ‘Freefall‘ – which feels like a more commercially viable release. He also returned to his Gouryella alias with ‘Surga‘.

Ferry Corsten has brought in another big name into the Unity project, with the legend that is BT. After remixing BT’s track ‘Suddenly’ in 2010, the pair are familiar with each other’s prowess in the studio, and that united vision is showcased in abundance. The team-up sees both artists strengths utilised to their best potential to create a track that is greater than the sum of its parts. As it should, the production leans heavily on the killer uplifting melody – which is a prominent throughout the entire track. The mix of each artist’s styles is present and concludes in an epic collaboration.

Ferry launched the UNITY project in 2018 with his collaboration alongside Paul Oakenfold titled ‘A Slice Of Heaven’, and continued working with artists within the Trance community throughout the year, such as DIM3NSION, Jordan Suckley, Saad Ayub and Ilan Bluestone, and after the success of 2018 has more releases in store after making his first donation to project partner, VH1’s Save The Music Foundation, an organisation launched to reinstate music programs in public schools, which to date has raised over $53 million and helped over 2,100 public schools.

4 Years ‘Without You’: How Avicii’s Passing Signalled The Death Of ‘EDM’

“AVICII DEAD, AGED 28”
Friday 20th April 2018.

Most will remember where they were, what they were doing, and who they were with, when they heard the news. There was an initial feeling that this newly-found reality of a Bergling shaped void in our future society was some form of elaborate ruse on such an eerie Friday evening. The weekend passed, coated in glorious skies filled with beaming sunshine, and tributes began to flood in from across the globe, none more prominent than in his native Stockholm. 4 years on, this date still marks a haunting and melancholic feeling among true Tim aficionados, caught between the emotive sadness of such tragedy, or the need to celebrate his genius via a pioneering back-catalogue and legacy.

Fast forward to 2022 and as the brightest supernova in our sky full of stars begins to flicker once again on this anniversary of such a date, the Avicii-shaped silhouette which still looms large in the torn curtain of ‘EDM’, bears more prominence than ever before. 2018 was a truly monumental year for the term invented by the American crowd at the turn of the last decade, with Tim‘s death prompting the retirement of Hardwell, (the former number 1 DJ in the world declaring his own need to prioritise his mental health), and the comeback of Swedish House Mafia, who many felt would offer the type of reicarnation of the same ‘progressive-house‘ sound they’d shared alongside Bergling at the peak of their powers around 2010-2013. What we’ve seen since, couldn’t be further from such a prediction.

With the King of ‘EDM’ felled by the broken arrows of his own depression, various artists started to turn away from the joyfully euphoric yet sometimes shallow sound of the mainstage-ready anthems which has filled the lungs of just about Millennial looking to ‘rage’ through their late teens and early 20s during the peak boom of the genre. David Guetta, a man facing intense ridicule throughout the mid-part of the decade, salavaged his career from the depths of meme territory, in the very same year. First, asking festival promoters to ‘turn off the lights’, as he aired deep techno brooders like Adriatique‘s ‘Voices From The Dawn, on iconic mainstages, before launching into his ‘Jack Back‘ alias to deliver tech-house stompers on iconic dance labels like Defected, during his Ibiza residency. If the Frenchman himself had – alongside Calvin, SHM, Avicii etc – proved the catalyst for the rise of DJs as the new rockstars in 2010, then he too was to prove the man to reverse the tide heading into the next decade.

A quartet of years later, and Guetta‘s bold decision has proved somewhat justified. Claiming DJ Mag‘s infamous yet prestigious gong as the World’s finest for the past two years in succession, the voting shift has proved personification of fan tastes, as more start to turn away from the “3, 2, 1, jump” nature of a booming Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike hook, instead opting for the ‘Future Rave‘ sound coined by Guetta and Scandinavian colleague, MORTEN. Elsewhere across the scene, producers are tapping into their own artist versatility and desire to craft sounds unique to them, and refreshing to many. The only pockets of ‘Paradise Again‘ criticism were fired by those expecting ‘Don’t You Worry Child 2.0‘, with most journalists acknowledging the brave shift from Monsieurs Angello, Ingrosso, and Hedfors, in crafting their own unique piece of art, despite the potential backlash. Likewise, Hardwell‘s return at Ultra last month may have proved a damp squib to many members of the ‘Big Room Never Dies‘ community who were expecting. a flurry of ‘Spaceman‘ and ‘Apollo‘ style anthems to echo out into the Florida skyline.

In the form of his new tech-inspired sound, particularly latest single ‘F*CKING SOCIETY’, the Revealed head honcho is still very much adhering to his ‘Go Hardwell or Go Home‘ slogan, though this time he’s battering his way through those aggressive basslines with a sleek jet-black industrial drill, rather than the shiny wood-silk hammer of 2014. Of course, such artists will not be the last to experiment so wildly, and openly, in such a public forum. But they won’t be the first. That honour rests with the man who inspired others, and demonstrated courage and confidence above all, at a time when the drop-hungry audience was far less forgiving. When Avicii turned up to Ultra Music Festival in 2013 as the posterboy for a bubble which showed no sign of bursting, he was undoubtedly at the peak of his powers.

Leaving the Miami crowd open-mouthed and stunned into audible silence, Avicii aired an army of IDs from his country & western-infused forthcoming album in place of crowd favourites like ‘I Could Be The One’, with the fiasco now going down in folklore. Dance website Dancing Astronaut labelled the set “too advanced for dance music”, whilst Avicii himself issued an official statement in the aftermath that read: “Wow looks like I stirred up some controversy with my set Friday night at UMF. Seeing a lot of people who don’t understand. I really wanted to switch things up and do something fun and different, as I always strive for, and this album is about experimentation and about showing the endless possibilities of house and electronic music. People will soon see what it’s all about.”

The latter part of said statement feels particularly poignant, with ‘Wake Me Up‘ – the standpiece track of the performance which garnered so much negativity – going on to reach number 1 in 22 countries just a few short months later, en route to multi-platinum certification and various awards and records. To this day, the track is closing in on 2 BILLION Spotify streams, making it one of the most listened-to tracks ever made in music history. Such artistic bravery is what set Tim apart from the others, and represents the figurehead of a myriad of reasons as to why he’ll never fade into darkness. If there’s one thing the past 4 years have taught us, it is that the fizzing-energy of the fist-pumping ‘Levels’ world we once knew, is long gone, but not forgotten. EDM is dead… Long live the King.

SiriusXM’s DisDance Festival Features Some Of The Biggest Dance Acts Including Avicii

SiriusXM presents its first-ever DisDance Festival hosted by The Chainsmokers.

Featuring some of the biggest acts in the dance world, the DisDance Festival may be the biggest online event based on star power that we have experienced since quarantining. Whilst it seems like the festival will be audio only, this is sure to be a staggering collections of mixes.

The 3-day virtual event goes down Friday, May 22 through Sunday, May 24 via SiriusXM’s popular dance channel BPM (Ch. 51). Like many online festivals we’ve seen throughout quarantine, donations will be made to the Recording Academy‘s MusiCares organization.

This event marks the first time some of these artists have performed since COVID-19 took over the world. Marshmello, The Chainsmokers, Above & Beyond and others will play a set online for the first time since isolated.

What is most notable about the lineup is the inclusion of Avicii. The flyer states they will air an exclusive 2011 set from the late artist. We’ll see what is exclusive about it next Saturday the 23rd.

Remembering Avicii On The 2nd Anniversary Of His Death

0

2 years ago today, on April 20th 2018 – the world lost one of the most talented electronic producers to date. With some of the biggest and most impactful records ever – Avicii was a one of a kind producer whose loss is still felt considerably.

Avicii seemingly didn’t cope well with the immense pressures and anxiety that came from touring and just being an artist overall. In 2016 he quit DJing, taking the time to focus on himself and produce. In early 2018, from an outside perspective – things seemingly looked positive with a potential return to shows in sight. This unfortunately was not the case as Avicii took his own life aged 28 whilst holidaying in Oman.

The news was made even more tragic by the release of the Avicii: True Stories documentary which had premiered just 6 months before. This documentary went behind the scenes and showed the struggles Tim faced and why it ultimately became too much for him.

Since his passing, the outpouring of love from fans and fellow artists has been like nothing else. The reaction to his album was incredible, the 12 track LP featured many tracks fans had been anticipating. The album also brought a sense of closure to his death. Till this day however, there are countless tracks that remain unreleased. Kygo aided in the release of ‘Forever Yours’ together with Sandro Cavassa, allowing the track to be finished and released for the public to enjoy.

One of the most significant moments since his passing has been the tribute concert, which saw almost 60,000 attendees. This was a monumental moment, raising funds for the Tim Bergling Foundation. Featuring DJ friends David Guetta, Nicky Romero, Laidback Luke, Kygo and others, it also saw many of Tim’s collaborators including Aloe Blacc, Carl Falk, Vargas & Lagola, Bonn, Albin Nedler among several others. It was Avicii’s dream to have an orchestra perform his music and that finally happened at his tribute show.

Just recently, Aloe Blacc announced a 24 hour livestream that will begin at midnight Los Angeles (PST) time on the 20th. The stream will feature performances, interviews – all associated with the late producer.

We remember Avicii on this day, and every other day. His timeless productions will be just that, timeless and never forgotten.

Back In Time: The 13 Best Dance Anthems of 2013

After showcasing the best dance anthems from 2010, 2011 and 2012 – next up is 2013. Just like 2012, 2013 had many noteworthy releases which brought Avicii into the mainstream, Martin Garrix to the top of the dance world and more. Below we list 13 of the best and most impactful tracks of the era. It’s not easy to narrow it down to 13 so be sure to read through our honourable mentions for a pleasant dose of nostalgia!

Avicii "Wake Me Up"

Avicii – Wake Me Up

When Avicii premiered ‘Wake Me Up’ at Ultra 2013, it was not well received along with the rest of his country-esque set. However, that reaction flipped when the song came to be released. Having just just recently hitting both 2 billion YouTube plays and 1 billion on Spotify, this record was everywhere soon after releasing. Together with Aloe Blacc, Avicii further broke down the barrier between dance and commercial. It was a smashing success, even being named as the highest charting dance track of the decade (2010-2019), sitting at No. 13 in the 100-strong list from the official UK Singles Chart. Whilst ‘Levels’ was a breakout hit for the Swede, ‘Wake Me Up’ saw Avicii break out of the dance music scene into the mainstream.

‘Wake Me Up’ is one of many insanely impactful contributions Avicii had to music. We certainly miss him and his music!

Oliver Heldens - Gecko (Overdrive) Artwork (1 of 3) | Last.fm

Oliver Heldens – Gecko

Before ‘Gecko’, Oliver Heldens was a fresh but underappreciated name in the scene. Once his name was attached the release, everything changed for the Dutchman. Spinnin’ and Musical Freedom created mystery by labeling the track as ‘ID – Gecko’ – with fans speculating it was from some of the biggest acts in the world.

‘Gecko’ not only kicked off Oliver Heldens’ career, it also started a deep/future house trend throughout the dance world. With this sound having largely fizzled out, we can still appreciate what it did and how good it actually was. Oliver teamed up with Becky Hill for the ‘Overdrive’ vocal version which put the production in front of the masses.

The music video is something different… to say the least. Best to watch for yourselves (maybe also by yourself).

Steam Workshop :: Martin Garrix - Animals (Official Video)

Martin Garrix – Animals

Prior to release, the track gained buzz after being played anonymously. Speculation increased about the author after Dutch record label Spinnin’ Records released a clip of the track online simply titled ‘Animals (Teaser)’. The track was, at various times, attributed to other acts like Hardwell, GTA, Sidney Samson and Bassjackers before the actual identity of the producer was revealed.

With north of 1 billion views on YouTube and over 350 million through Spotify, this broke through the dance crowd and into the mainstream. Listening back now, for this type of record to hit the mainstream – it needed to be something special. The percussion big room sound that ‘Animals’ embraced spawned many follow ups throughout the industry – with the biggest genre throughout 2013 and 2014 largely this sound.

Garrix has since outdone himself, becoming a household name with releases such as ‘Scared To Be Lonely’, ‘In The Name Of Love’ and many others – both in the commercial and the dance space.

Με το φτωχό μου το μυαλό: 2013

Showtek feat. We Are Loud & Sonny Wilson – Booyah

‘Booyah’ was everywhere in 2013, almost to the point of exhaustion. In 2020 we can appreciate the quality of the release and what it did for Showtek’s career.

At the time, the bouncy electro house sound was fresh and new, ‘Booyah’ set in motion the sound that was used throughout the scene. Most notably, Showtek themselves utilised the sound in multiple records, specifically with their follow up ‘We Like To Party’ – the debut release on their Skint imprint.

Together with David Guetta, the duo released three records that utilize the sound in different ways dependant on the release year.

Tsunami (Radio Edit) - DVBBS/Borgeous - 单曲- 网易云音乐

DVBBS & Borgeous – Tsunami

However they may be regarded these days, DVBBS, together with Borgeous, had a tremendous impact on dance music with ‘Tsunami’. Produced by KSHMR also, whilst uncredited, it was a major release for him before he came out to the public eye as KSHMR. Later released on his label, Sander van Doorn was playing it out and it became quite the popular ID, until the names were finally unveiled.

Almost a year after the release, the vocal mix was released and re-titled ‘Tsunami (Jump)’, the new version featured vocals from English rapper Tinie Tempah. This more commercial approach paid off, with the record charting around the world, even achieving Platinum status in Australia.

Just like many records in this list, this track inspired various replicas. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike later connected with DVBBS and Borgeous on ‘Stampede’.

OneRepublic & Alesso – If I Lose Myself (Alesso vs OneRepublic ...

Alesso vs OneRepublic – If I Lose Myself

It is not often that a remix grows and becomes bigger than the original, but in the case of Alesso’s take on ‘If I Lose Myself’ – the original was left in the dust. After working with the lead vocalist of OneRepublic; Ryan Tedder on ‘Calling’ – Alesso’s pre-existenting relationship brought on remix duties, to the extent that it was nominated for a Grammy.

Alesso stated that he hadn’t been this happy about a remix since his incredible take on ‘Pressure’, which is understandable as these would undoubtedly be his best two remixes to date. This remix, along with a string of impressive singles helped Alesso get to the point of commercial stardom that he is at right now.

Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers – Get Lucky

Les titres Dance/Electro des années passées…

When ‘Get Lucky’ was released, you couldn’t go anywhere without it in your eardrums. The track was of course good, but after the thousandth listen, any song can become annoying. Listening back now, we can appreciate the quality and ultimately see why it did so well.

The song won awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, during which Stevie Wonder joined Rodgers, Williams and Daft Punk onstage to perform the song.

Whilst it traversed the dance world and was largely one of the biggest songs in 2013 overall, the impact it had was monumental and brought Daft Punk back on top where they belong.

Listen Free to Dimitri Vegas - Mammoth Radio | iHeartRadio

Dimitri Vegas, MOGUAI & Like Mike – Mammoth

After appearing in the 2012 Tomorrowland after movie (in its mashup form with M83’s hit ‘Midnight City’), ‘Mammoth’ became a much wanted ID. In 2013, unlike other Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike ID’s at the time, it was released. With well over 200 million plays on YouTube and close to 50 million through Spotify – ‘Mammoth’ is absolutely a defining track of 2013.

A year and a half after the original release, on 1 September 2014, ‘Mammoth’ was re-released in a vocal version titled ‘Body Talk (Mammoth)’. It featured vocals from Julian Perretta and was co-written by Matthew Koma. Though this version was not as successful as the original instrumental, it peaked much higher in Belgium and also charted in France.

Stream Free Songs by Fatboy Slim & Similar Artists | iHeartRadio

Fatboy Slim & Riva Starr feat. Beardyman – Eat Sleep Rave Repeat (Calvin Harris Remix)

Once Fatboy Slim and Riva Starr released ‘Eat Sleep Rave Repeat’, the lyrics engrossed the dance market and became a staple in every set. Whilst the original impacted the scene, it was the Calvin Harris remix that took it to the next level. The record’s success had it land at #3 on the UK singles chart, becoming Fatboy Slim’s first top ten since 2001. It features vocals from Beardyman who improvised all of the captivating lyrics and vocals in one take.

Even though it was released 7 years ago, the acapella is still frequently used today and there are no signs of its usage slowing down.

City Of Dreams (Single) by Dirty South & Alesso - Pandora

Dirty South & Alesso feat. Ruben Haze – City Of Dreams

‘City of Dreams’ marked a collaboration that does not occur often. At the time, Dirty South and Alesso were at the forefront of the melodic progressive house sound and them coming together was truly something magical. Linking up with Ruben Haze, the trio produced a masterclass of melodies and progression, a record that still holds up today – 7 years later.

The eclectic and uplifting vocals from Ruben Haze is the icing on top of the already incredible cake that is the instrumental. The lack of music such as ‘City Of Dreams’ in 2020 has us further appreciating how special 2013 was for dance music.

Calvin Harris & Alesso feat. Hurts – Under Control

Originally one of Alesso’s elusive 2012 era unreleased IDs, Calvin Harris and Hurts came onboard to result in ‘Under Control’. Not only did it have the star power to succeed – it was an incredible record with top notch vocals and one of Alesso’s one of a kind melodies and sound designs.

With platinum and gold achieved in many countries throughout the world and a play count of over 550 million across YouTube and Spotify – the record was groundbreaking for everyone involved. Not only did this record stand out in the EDM community, it surpassed it and made its way onto radio and into the heads of average punters, largely by having Calvin Harris’ name attached.

Tiesto Red Lights | Light red, Google play music, Kids songs

Tiësto – Red Lights

One of the numerous times that Tiësto has broken through to the mainstream was ‘Red Lights’ – the lead track of his A Town Called Paradise album. Featuring uncredited vocals from Michel Zitron, the track features everything you’d want from a pop dance release.

It became Tiësto’s first number one hit in Scotland, his first top ten hit in the United Kingdom and his highest-charting single in Ireland and Australia. Additionally, ‘Red Lights’ also became Tiësto’s second highest-charting single in the United States. The song also peaked at number two on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs and number six on the US Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs charts. During its lifetime, it achieved Platinum in Australia and the United States.

Lana Del Rey vs Cedric Gervais – Summertime Sadness

After Universal Germany commissioned the remix by Cedric Gervais, Interscope and Polydor later rejected it – not seeing its potential. After being released to a more dance friendly label Spinnin’, it surged to #1 on Beatport and was then supported by heavyweights throughout the industry. After the initial and overall reaction from not only the dance space but throughout the pop world – Interscope reverse the decision and later signed the remix.

The track achieved 4x platinum in Australia and the United States, 2x platinum in Canada and the United Kingdom, 1x platinum in Mexico and gold in the Netherlands and New Zealand.

It definitely helped that the original version was a massive success. Across YouTube and Spotify, the two versions have a combined play total of over a billion. If consulting people today, the Cedric Gervais remix would likely be more familiar than the original.

Tiësto Plays 3 Unreleased Avicii Tracks on Club Life

0

On the latest episode of Club Life, Tiësto dropped three unreleased and Avicii tracks around the 33 minute mark.

  1. Avicii feat. Aloe Blacc – I Wanna Be Free
  2. Avicii feat. Sandro Cavazza – We Burn (Working Title)
  3. Avicii feat. Wyclef Jean – Now That We Found Love

Whilst Tiësto claims, “I don’t even know where they came from.” The high quality tracks have actually been leaked and these leaked versions are what Tiësto has played on his radio show.

Whether or not Tiësto got permission, many wonder if he should be playing these leaks. Avicii’s family have been against the leaks and may not be pleased that Tiësto just shined a light on them.

One things for sure, we can agree with Tiësto about how these three records show how “innovative and creative” Avicii was and that we hope they eventually see the light of day.

Kygo Keeps Avicii Alive With Tribute ‘Forever Yours’ Alongside Sandro Cavassa

0

Today, Avicii’s unfinished and unreleased track ‘Forever Yours’ with Sandro Cavazza was released. This was not possible without Avicii inspired artist Kygo. This must have been very special for Kygo to do, the Norwegian artist is a huge fan of the late artist and even got a tattoo after his passing.

Originally premiered at Ultra in 2016, ‘Forever Yours’ fell into the grouping of Avicii’s unreleased tracks, until today. With Kygo working together with Sandro Cavazza on ‘Happy Now’, the two acts seemingly further worked on the unreleased Avicii track – making today’s release possible. The track was played at Tim’s tribute concert as a tribute by Kygo & Sandro.

One of my biggest dreams was to get in the studio with Tim. Unfortunately we never, you know, got to do that. So when he (Sandro) sent me that song I felt like that was the closest I could get to collaborate with Tim. – Kygo

Universal Music stated; “During a trip across the US in 2016, Sandro Cavazza played Tim an early version of “Forever Yours.” Heading towards Avicii’s show at Ultra Miami, Tim immediately started working on it on the tour bus and played a demo at the festival. The song was never completed or released while Tim was alive, but now Kygo and Sandro have together produced a version to honor his memory.” The artwork further depicts Avicii’s travels through America on his way to Miami, working on music with friends.

After Avicii’s ‘TIM’ album and then multiple remixes from fellow artists, this is the most recent piece of posthumous music we have received and hopefully not the last.

Aligning with Avicii’s posthumous album ‘TIM’, the artists involved have advised that all proceeds from the track will go to the Tim Bergling Foundation in support of mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
