CULTR Staff — 13 October 2026

Crypto has come a long way, evolving from a geeky niche among tech enthusiasts into a global phenomenon almost everyone has heard of. People follow the markets, keep tabs on the widely followed Bitcoin price prediction, integrate crypto into their investment portfolios and blend it with traditional financial assets, and debate how this technology could continue to reshape money and financial institutions as we know them.

Inevitably, crypto and blockchain have become a red-hot subject for filmmakers. A growing stream of documentaries and films has brought this technological breakthrough to the screens, giving viewers a different and gripping way to understand this complex space. Whether you’re into fiction, financial crime, drama, comedy, action, or real-life stories, the cinematic landscape has something to offer everyone. Here, we take a look at eight of the most interesting titles that you may add to your watchlist.

Cryptopia: Bitcoin, Blockchains and the Future of the Internet

Award-winning director and producer Torsten Hoffmann takes viewers behind crypto’s technology and the ideas that drive the broader industry in a documentary that features some of the industry’s most recognized names, like Vitalik Buterin, Andreas Antonopoulos, Dr. Jemma Green, Laura Shin, and Charlie Lee. It explores how Bitcoin works, why blockchain technology matters, what Web3 could bring, and what decentralization could mean for the future of financial systems and the internet. Experts discuss Bitcoin as well as alternative cryptos like Ethereum, Litecoin, and NEO. The doc was released in 2020 and offers different views on how these technologies could change the way we use both money and the internet.

Banking on Bitcoin

Directed by Christopher Cannucciari, this is a documentary that traces Bitcoin back to its cryptographic roots and explores its history and evolution, diving deep into how this technology took over the financial world. Released in 2016, this one will take you through the early days of Bitcoin and show you how an experimental digital currency managed to challenge what people knew about money and financial institutions, less than a decade after Bitcoin’s launch. It also explores the regulatory challenges the crypto space faced at the time, when financial authorities and governments were still trying to figure out how to classify such assets.

Decrypted

Satoshi Nakamoto is one of the most recognized iconic names in crypto, known as the anonymous founder of Bitcoin and the pioneer of blockchain technology, who published Bitcoin’s white paper in 2008. In 2011, Nakamoto vanished completely and left their true identity an unknown mystery. For all we know, Satoshi Nakamoto may be a single developer or a group of developers who are rumored to own the largest amount of Bitcoin.

This dark comedy that dropped in 2021 capitalizes on this legendary story and follows a secret government team that kidnaps the creator to coerce them into disclosing the secret needed to destroy all cryptocurrencies around. Its mix of humor and intrigue combines tension and comedy into a truly one-of-a-kind crypto production that keeps viewers hooked from A to Z.

Crypto

Blending drama with crime, this 2019 film follows a young Wall Street banker sent back to his hometown after strict anti-money-laundering rules cause trouble at work. He then starts to investigate shady activities associated with a local art gallery and finds connections that go far beyond his small town. The film explores a larger scheme involving organized crime, financial institutions, and Bitcoin. Kurt Russell, Luke Hemsworth, Beau Knapp, and Alexis Bledel are some of the most well-known actors who feature in Crypto.

Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King

This is a gripping documentary launched in 2022 that follows a group of crypto investors who turn into detectives trying to solve the mystery surrounding the death of a major crypto exchange founder. While on his honeymoon in India, the founder dies in 2018 and takes the passwords to accounts holding no less than $250MN in customer funds with him, leaving investors unable to access their money. As they try to uncover what happened and recover the money, they start to question the circumstances of his death – doubting that the founder actually fabricated his death to run away with the funds.

Bitcoin Heist

If you’re looking for a lighthearted, easy-to-watch film about Bitcoin, this 2016 Vietnamese action film could be a good choice. Bitcoin Heist follows an Interpol agent who organizes a team of criminals with different skills to locate a wanted hacker known as “The Ghost”. An accountant, a thief, a magician, and a hacker form a group with fun chemistry that keeps the film entertaining from start to finish. The film’s styling is a throwback to the popular American comedy Ocean’s Eleven, being frequently described as the Vietnamese version of this classic blockbuster, replicating both the Hollywood-like heist format and the group’s quirky dynamic.

Trust Machine: The Story of Blockchain

This documentary shifts focus from Bitcoin to the concept, roots, and use cases of the technological breakthrough that made cryptocurrencies possible: blockchain technology. It’s a one-of-a-kind production because it explores how this technology could help fight world hunger and address income disparity, diving deeper into how decentralized ledgers are reshaping industries, revolutionizing how value moves, and taking privacy and anonymity to a whole new level.

Crypto Rush

This documentary, released six years ago, is for those who didn’t get the hang of crypto and puts complex technological concepts in plain words to make crypto and blockchain easy to understand. Crypto Rush takes a unique approach by looking at the growing presence of women in the cryptocurrency space, following a woman who invests in a crypto mining farm by mistake, an occurrence that introduces her to the Bitcoin phenomenon that has spread around the world. It also examines the philosophical, political, and economic pillars of the crypto industry.

As you can see, the cinematic world is an endless resource of perspectives and ideas that make complex topics like blockchain and crypto easier to understand while keeping things interesting. So, which title has caught your attention?
