Wandour Captures the Sound of Memory in His Analogue-Driven New Album, Echoterrium

A fleeting sound, like the distant hum of a train or a sudden burst of radio static, possesses a unique power to unexpectedly pull us right back into a forgotten memory. This profound connection between sound and nostalgia is the beating heart of Echoterrium, the new album from Indonesian electronic producer Wandour. Built from an intricate tapestry of cassette loops and field recordings collected during his global travels, the project is a masterful exploration of analogue music. Wandour envisions this album as an “aquarium of echoes”, where half-lost memories float just beneath the surface.

As a self-described wanderer, Wandour’s creative process is deeply rooted in his physical journeys. Armed with a vintage field recorder, he captures raw environmental sounds and weaves them with electronic instrumentation. These are then processed repeatedly through weathered tape decks. In a modern landscape where electronic music often strives for pristine digital perfection, Wandour proudly takes the opposite route by leaving the hiss and physical distortion intact.

The album effortlessly navigates different facets of memory. On the standout track ‘Seaside Moments’, hypnotic breakbeats beautifully evoke lazy days spent by the ocean. Meanwhile, ‘Forest Spirits’ combines deep bass with a sweeping string ensemble, and the upcoming single ‘Sunshine Waves’ offers a pure burst of uncomplicated joy.

Ultimately, Wandour uses imperfect audio as gentle prompts, giving listeners the space to project their own experiences onto the music. Places change and memories blur over time, but Echoterrium proves that a simple sound is all it takes to bring it all vividly back into focus.
