Known for his deep baritone and sharp wit, he’s carving out a unique space for himself with his debut single “Golden Boy,” signaling a readiness to charm audiences far beyond Texas. Mackay’s musical roots run deep, tracing back to his high school days where he honed his guitar skills on Nirvana’s fiery riffs, Radiohead’s complex melodies, and Beck’s diverse rhythms. After moving to Austin, he soaked up the influences of underground legends like the Black Angels and Broncho, which spurred him into songwriting and forming his band, Kenton Mackay and the Sensors.
His latest track, “Royalty Free,” is a vibrant piece from his upcoming debut EP. Drawing inspiration from Radiohead’s “Bodysnatchers,” Mackay puts his twist on the iconic riff, blending it with his powerful vocals to create a nostalgic yet fresh sound. He describes the song humorously as an ironic pop anthem about the performer’s dilemma of craving both attention and money.
