Austin’s Own KENTON MACKAY ****** Reveals Energetic Single In ‘ROYALTY FREE’

Kenton Mackay is fast becoming a standout figure in Austin’s eclectic music scene. Known for his deep baritone and sharp wit, he’s carving out a unique space for himself with his debut single “Golden Boy,” signaling a readiness to charm audiences far beyond Texas. Mackay’s musical roots run deep, tracing back to his high school days where he honed his guitar skills on Nirvana’s fiery riffs, Radiohead’s complex melodies, and Beck’s diverse rhythms. After moving to Austin, he soaked up the influences of underground legends like the Black Angels and Broncho, which spurred him into songwriting and forming his band, Kenton Mackay and the Sensors.

His latest track, “Royalty Free,” is a vibrant piece from his upcoming debut EP. Drawing inspiration from Radiohead’s “Bodysnatchers,” Mackay puts his twist on the iconic riff, blending it with his powerful vocals to create a nostalgic yet fresh sound. He describes the song humorously as an ironic pop anthem about the performer’s dilemma of craving both attention and money.

Mackay’s music, characterized by its mix of frenzied energy and reflective depth, touches on themes like isolation, mental health, and the quirks of modern life, all with a satirical edge. His approach is about finding the beauty and humor in everyday experiences, a trait that makes his songs relatable and engaging.

Mackay’s commitment to authenticity shines through in his production process. He records most of his work at his home, a place steeped in musical history as it once hosted the psychedelic pioneers, The Thirteenth Floor Elevators. For the single, he teamed up with Erik Wofford, who has worked with notable bands like My Morning Jacket, to add the finishing touches.

In essence, Kenton Mackay is not just an emerging musician but an artist who embodies the spirit of Austin’s vibrant music scene. With his upcoming releases, he’s poised to leave a lasting impression on the broader musical landscape.
