In this interview, we will dive into Melleefresh’s creative process, exploring how she approaches production, collaboration, and what other activities help her bring her music to life.

This is what she said.

Hey Melleefresh! how are you?

Feeling good! Happy to be healthy and alive. 🙂

We want to know more about your creative process, where and how do you usually find inspiration?

Usually at 3 AM in my studio, alone with no distractions, drinking a large Espresso listening to a track that needs a lyric, searching for exotic words in my thesaurus, and finding interesting themes from TMZ that I wanna sing about.

Are there any non-music related activities that help you get inspired to work on new music?

Everything requires music; driving my car in the snow, late at night, “Music Blasting” when no other cars are around. Or dancing in my kitchen listening to “Melleefresh’s House Party” and making a colourful sprinkled candy crazy cake.

Do you usually follow the same process when producing a track? Or does it vary, and how?

Every track is different, sometimes I start with a beat and make up a lyric, or I have a melody line and a lyric in my head, or I have some music from a collab with another producer, I find the melody and I lay down a vocal send it to them, they do their thing send it back to me, it’s a process.

Which part of a track is your favorite to start working on?

The vocals, of course!!!

Does technology play a big part in helping you with your creative processes? If so, can you tell us how?

In order to get a really good sound, a studio works best for me, where I have access to a ton of different programs samples and sound effects, from Fruity Loops to Melodyne, an amazing mic,  like a Neumann, or the Michael Jackson favorite ,Shure SM7B and its always a bonus to have a skilled engineer so I can be the vocalist and he can fiddle with levels and record me, I can only do so much by myself, when I’m the one doin’ the singing in the booth.

Have you changed something in your production workflow recently?

I’m getting even more picky about the sound of my vocals.  I now have a really good vocal chain, that I use on my vocals before I even start recording, I make sure the EQ , compression, reverb and other levels are all set perfectly for me.

What has been the best change or implementation you made to your workflow in music production or in your creative process and how has that changed the way you make music?

Maximizing my studio time. Always be on time, or early for a session, make sure I have several tracks to work on, have all my lyrics ready to go, that the tracks are all in my key, so I can in fact sing them, if they aren’t, I have to transpose them, but good to get that stuff set up before you go record. Also, I produce my vocals, so I need to always listen back, to what I’ve done, then decide where to harmonize, do doubles add some effects, and know when it sounds perfect! If the vocals sound awful I only have myself to blame!

What advice would you give to someone starting a new creative endeavor?

Do it to death. Only you can make it happen.
