Earlier this year Indonesia’s Hip-Hop icon Rich Brian dropped “Love In Your Pocket’ which was later revealed as the first track off his 2020 EP ‘1999’, the follow up to his highly acclaimed 2019 album ‘The Sailor’. The catchy offering demonstrated Brian’s versatility by introducing new flavours to his repertoire. Now as the year winds down Brian and 88 Rising have enlisted pioneering Indonesian electronic trio Weird Genius to re-work the track into a heaving dance floor ready banger.
The remix spins ‘Love In My Pocket’ into a whole new dimension with Weird Genius flipping Brian’s vocal on its head, adding a powerful driving beat and bridging a symphony of sounds with a tantalising drop that will likely make you jump out of your seat and break into dance. The result is a unique collaboration that combines the forces of two of Indonesia’s biggest artists, it’s also notably the first official remix Rich Brian’s released in 4 years.
If Brian is Indonesia’s top hip-hop export, the Weird Genius trio are the country’s biggest electronic act. This year they served up the viral hit dance ‘LATHI’ which reached #1 on every music streaming service and broke the record for longest-running #1 on Spotify charts in Indonesia, racking up more than 200 million global streams along the way. Last week they were also nominated for five awards in the AMI Awards – the Indonesian equivalent of the Grammys. The trio also went on to release a collaboration with Yellow Claw called ‘Hush’ and have recently penned a record deal with Universal Music Group’s US-based Dance imprint Astralwerks.
Rich Brian’s ‘Love In My Pocket’ was written and produced with longtime collaborators Bekon and The Donuts (Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Rich Brian – ‘The Sailor’). The original version featured a slow funk-infused beat and silky vocals combined with a rap verse that many fans saw as one of his most experimental releases to date. Prior to the EP Rich Brain released ‘Bali’ with Guapdad 4000 which has amassed more than 15 million streams on Spotify.
