It is a bittersweet day for trance fans across the globe. German electronic music titans Cosmic Gate have officially announced they are splitting up after an incredible 27 years together. The duo released a statement confirming that Stefan “Bossi” Bossems is leaving the group and stepping away from touring, while Claus “Nic Chagall” Terhoeven will continue to fly the Cosmic Gate flag solo.
Bossi is officially stepping back from the gruelling realities of life on the road. After playing well over 1,000 gigs and travelling relentlessly for nearly three decades, he has decided to leave the intense touring schedule behind to relax and enjoy life away from the stage. However, fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the music will not stop completely. Claus will take over the Cosmic Gate project as a solo act, meaning new music and live shows will continue under the legendary alias.
The group formed entirely by accident in Krefeld, Germany, back in 1998. The two producers were left alone in a studio after a remix session fell apart, decided to write a track together instead, and inadvertently started one of the most successful partnerships in dance music history. They originally built their reputation on a heavy, hard trance sound before gracefully evolving over the decades into a sophisticated blend of progressive house and melodic electronic music. Their massive back catalogue includes quintessential club classics like ‘Exploration of Space’, ‘Fire Wire’, and ‘The Drums’, which cemented their status as global festival headliners.
The duo’s final collaborative effort is the highly praised Perspectives album project. To adapt to the fast-paced nature of modern music consumption, they originally chose to release the project as three separate EPs before combining them into a final extended album featuring fresh collaborations like ‘Bloom’.
Cosmic Gate leaves behind a towering legacy in the electronic music world. They managed to constantly push the genre forward without ever losing the emotional core that fans originally fell in love with. Their discography remains impressive for its sheer longevity and versatility, successfully transitioning from the aggressive beats of their early years to producing timeless, soaring vocal anthems like ‘Be Your Sound’ and ‘Heaven Knows’. Even as industry trends shifted, they maintained a signature cinematic atmosphere that always commanded the dancefloor.
