EXIT Festival Announces Historic Return to Serbia Following Student-Led Election Victory

After facing severe political, security and financial pressure, EXIT Festival is set to make a triumphant return to its iconic home at the Petrovaradin Fortress in Serbia. The announcement follows the historic election victory of a student-led movement that recently ended over a decade of political dominance by Aleksandar Vučić’s ruling party.

Organisers confirmed a special edition will take place in July 2027, with a full-scale return scheduled for 2028 to allow for the extensive preparation required.

Founded in 2000 as a student movement for democracy, EXIT grew into one of Europe’s premier music festivals. In a full-circle moment 26 years later, the festival threw its weight behind a new generation of Serbian students advocating for freedom. This vocal support led to severe repercussions, forcing the cancellation of the traditional 2026 event.

During this turbulent period, EXIT remained steadfast. Founder and CEO Dušan Kovačević noted the organisation faced severe threats, including the detention of his brother ahead of a major protest.
“Last year, when a new student movement emerged to fight for freedom and justice, we simply had to stand with them and uphold the very values EXIT was built on,” Kovačević said. He added that the courage of the students brought freedom back, allowing the festival to return home.

While the grand comeback is set for 2028, overwhelming fan demand prompted the 2027 special event to celebrate freedom, unity and love.

During its time away from Serbia, EXIT expanded globally, delivering eight events across six countries, culminating in the historic Starlight Festival at the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt in October 2026.
Further details regarding the 2027 edition will be announced soon.
