Inside aprtment life: Dean M.F. Johnson And The Visual Evolution Of DJ Culture

The modern DJ set has evolved into a highly visual experience. Audiences are now accustomed to seeing carefully curated interiors, coordinated colour palettes, and intimate crowds gathered around the decks. This specific visual language was not always the standard before British producer and creative director Dean M.F. Johnson launched the aprtment life project in 2021. Alongside recording artist Shea Soul and DJ Parismatiq, Johnson began developing this unique concept inside a real family home in London.
The initiative was built on a deep foundation of music culture. Over a decade earlier, Johnson co-produced the 2009 UK funky anthem ‘Make It Funky For Me’ featuring Shea Soul. This history allowed the aprtment life team to approach DJ culture with a profound understanding of how records connect people to specific times and places. The project officially debuted on 9 May 2021 with a video of a remix of Musiq Soulchild’s track ‘Halfcrazy’.
As the collective expanded, DJ and musical curator Miamor joined the founding trio. A defining feature of aprtment life was making the room itself a central part of the experience rather than an afterthought. Instead of building a fake studio, the team used a genuine home where everyday furniture, lamps, and books remained visible. Friends and family gathered in clothing that followed a neutral colour palette, ensuring that every reaction captured on camera was completely authentic. By treating interior design, cinematography, and fashion as vital elements, the project framed the DJ as the focal point of a genuine gathering.
The focus on building distinct musical personalities led to massive digital success. Parismatiq’s third volume garnered 1.4 million YouTube views, while a session by Miamor also surpassed the 1.1 million mark. Driven by this momentum, the apartment concept went global. The team hosted sold-out physical experiences across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and various destinations in Australia.
The brand reached a major milestone for its fifth anniversary in 2026. Johnson and his team constructed an apartment replica inside Outernet Live in central London to host approximately 1,300 attendees. Today, aprtment life boasts a combined following of over 1.1 million across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, generating more than 32 million views on its YouTube catalogue alone. Its distinctive blend of music and style has also attracted partnerships with global brands like Levi’s and L’Occitane. While the scale has grown dramatically from a single London home to global venues, the core principle remains identical. The project continues to provide a cohesive space where people can share authentic moments over great music.
