The Room Is the Instrument: What Actually Goes Into Building a Music Venue

Every scene has one: the venue where everything sounds enormous, and the one two streets away where the same band on the same rig sounds like a phone in a bucket. Same PA hire company, same engineer half the time, completely different night.

People blame the sound guy. It’s almost never the sound guy. It’s the room, and the room was decided years earlier by people who were thinking about budgets, ceiling heights and fire exits rather than about how a kick drum behaves at 60Hz.

Sound Does Two Different Jobs, and Buildings Confuse Them

There are two separate problems and almost everyone conflates them.

The first is what happens to sound inside the room: how long it hangs around, where it bounces, whether the low end piles up in one corner and vanishes in another. That’s acoustics, and it’s the difference between a mix that lands and one that turns to mush past the third row.

The second is what happens to sound leaving the room, which is isolation. That’s the neighbours, the licence, and whether the venue is still open in five years.

Fixing one does nothing for the other. Hanging absorbent panels everywhere will tame a boomy room and will not stop a single decibel reaching the flat upstairs, because that requires mass and structural separation rather than soft furnishings.

Isolation Is Structural, Which Is Why It’s Expensive

Here’s the part that catches new operators. Stopping low frequencies escaping a building means decoupling: floating floors, independent wall leaves, resilient mounts, breaking the physical path that lets vibration travel through the structure into the ground and out again.

Bass is the enemy because it’s long-wavelength and it travels through solids beautifully. You can hear a kick drum through a wall that has completely stopped the vocals.

None of that is retrofit work you do cheaply on a Tuesday. Which means the decision either gets made at construction stage or it becomes the thing that eventually kills the venue.

Venues Are Built By Contractors, Not By Sound Designers

Worth being blunt about how these projects actually happen. A venue fit-out is a commercial construction project, and it runs on the same logic as any other: a general contractor, a set of drawings, a programme, a budget with contingency, subcontractors for mechanical and electrical, and an inspection regime.

The acoustic consultant, if there is one, produces a specification. Whether that specification survives contact with value engineering is decided in meetings the consultant may not attend. That’s where venues get quietly ruined: the isolation detail gets simplified, the ceiling gets dropped 400 millimetres, the resilient channel becomes a direct fix because it saves three weeks.

Anyone opening a venue should understand that the person protecting the acoustic outcome is whoever is willing to say no during the build. If nobody has that job, the cheapest compliant option wins by default.

Ceiling Height Is the Thing You Can Never Fix

If you take one number away, take this one. Ceiling height determines more about how a room sounds than any treatment you can buy afterwards.

Low ceilings create strong early reflections that arrive at the listener almost simultaneously with the direct sound, which smears transients and makes everything feel small and hard. Height gives sound somewhere to go before it comes back.

It also determines what you can rig, which affects what acts you can book, which affects whether the venue has a business. A 3.5-metre ceiling is a small-band room forever, regardless of ambition.

The Standard Most Venue Operators Have Never Read

There’s now an international benchmark for this, and it deserves more attention in the music world than it gets.

In March 2022 the World Health Organization published its global standard for safe listening at venues and events, aimed at the estimated one billion young people at risk of hearing loss from recreational sound exposure. It sets out six features: a maximum average sound level of 100 decibels, live monitoring and recording of levels using calibrated equipment by designated staff, optimising venue acoustics and sound systems so that sound is both enjoyable and safe, making personal hearing protection available with instructions, providing access to quiet zones, and training staff.

Read that third feature again, because it’s the one with construction implications. Optimised acoustics aren’t presented as a nice-to-have for audiophiles, they’re framed as part of hearing protection. A room that distributes sound evenly doesn’t need to be pushed as loud at the back, which means the front rows take less punishment.

The standard has been applied in practice, including at India’s Serendipity Arts Festival in December 2023, reportedly the first major event to implement the full set. It’s voluntary, and it’s the closest thing the sector has to an agreed definition of a well-built room.

Everything Else Competes For the Same Space

The romantic version of venue design ends at acoustics. The real one is a fight over volume, and every system wants the same ceiling void.

Ventilation is the big one. Moving enough air for a full room means ductwork, and ductwork is a superb path for sound to travel between spaces unless it’s attenuated properly. Sprinklers, lighting bars, cable trays and structural steel all want the same zone. Meanwhile the audience wants sightlines, the licence wants exit widths, and accessibility requirements want circulation space and wheelchair positions with a decent view rather than a slot behind a pillar.

Every one of those is a legitimate constraint. Acoustics is the one that gets traded away first, because it’s the only one that doesn’t fail an inspection.

Why Small Venues Keep Closing

Grassroots venue closures usually get blamed on rents and ticket prices, and those are real. But a substantial number die on building issues: a noise complaint that becomes a licence condition, a condition that becomes a curfew, a curfew that kills the programme.

The venues that survive tend to be the ones that spent money on isolation at the start, when it was a line in a construction budget rather than an emergency retrofit under legal pressure. It’s the least glamorous spend in the entire project and it’s the one that determines whether there’s still a venue in a decade.

Rooms Outlive Line-ups

The bands change, the promoters change, the genre moves on. The room stays.

Which is why the good ones become institutions and the bad ones become a series of short-lived tenancies with different names above the door. Nobody in the audience will ever compliment a floating floor. They’ll just keep coming back to the place where it sounds right, without ever knowing why.
