FX’s acclaimed docuseries, ‘Welcome to Wrexham,’ has been officially renewed for a fifth season, Disney+ confirmed today. The Emmy-winning show will continue to chronicle the remarkable ascent of Wrexham AFC as they prepare for their debut in the EFL Championship, following an unprecedented third consecutive promotion. Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, shared the news while the series is currently in its fourth season, with new episodes available on Fridays on Disney+ in Australia.
Alongside this renewal, FX and Disney+ Latin America have unveiled details for ‘Necaxa,’ a new spinoff docuseries. This project will see actress and entrepreneur Eva Longoria join forces with ‘Welcome to Wrexham’s’ Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. The trio are all investors in Club Necaxa, based in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The ‘Necaxa’ series is anticipated to launch this winter.
“Rob and Ryan helped Wrexham AFC become one of the greatest sports stories of our time and what has happened in Wrexham, Wales is truly magical. With Eva Longoria, they’re now teaming to support the dreams and aspirations of the Necaxa fans and Aguascalientes community too,” said Nick Grad, President, FX Entertainment. “As we begin the journey alongside our partners at Disney+ Latin America with FX’s “Necaxa” this winter, everyone is excited to see them bring the same love and support to Mexico that they’ll be bringing to the fifth season of “Welcome to Wrexham” as the Club heads into the Championship; the next chapter of its fairytale journey.”
The bilingual docuseries ‘Necaxa’ will follow Eva Longoria’s efforts to rejuvenate Club Necaxa, one of Mexico’s most historic football clubs, with the support of McElhenney and Reynolds. The series will provide an intimate look at a pivotal and often turbulent period for the club, featuring staff changes, career-altering injuries, and the unwavering determination of a team striving to exceed expectations and inspire their home city of Aguascalientes.
Club Necaxa, a former powerhouse in Mexican football, has endured decades of instability, including team relocations and battles against relegation. Despite its fluctuating national profile, a passionate core of supporters, affectionately known as ‘Rayos,’ remains steadfast in their belief that the club will rise again.
‘Necaxa’ will grant viewers unprecedented access, taking them onto the training grounds and into the locker room as Los Rayos and their fanbase pursue their playoff aspirations. It poses the critical question: Can Club Necaxa achieve success, or will they face another disappointing season and potentially lose the unwavering support of Aguascalientes?
The executive production team for ‘Necaxa’ includes Eva Longoria, Cris Abrego, Rachelle Mendez, Nick Frenkel, Jackie Cohn, George Dewey, Rob McElhenney, Ryan Reynolds, and Alex Fumero. The series is produced by Hyphenate Media Group, More Better Productions, Maximum Effort, and 3 Arts Entertainment.
