Mau P officially touched down in Australia this past weekend, and his Melbourne debut was everything we had hoped for. The Dutch powerhouse took over The Timber Yard in Port Melbourne, and he definitely showed the crowd why he is one of the biggest names in the world of house music.
The warm-up set by William Kiss was top-notch, setting the stage for the night with an incredible set that was just the right amount of sophisticated. By the time the man of the hour took the stage, the energy in the room was electric.
The music was incredible from start to finish, bringing with it amazing vibes and an epic energy that never stopped. It was the kind of night that was always a good time, defined by an incredibly vibey selection that kept the warehouse moving all night long. One of the highlights was the sheer number of IDs that made an appearance throughout the night. With so many unreleased tracks in the mix, you were always wondering what amazing track he was playing.
While the IDs kept the punters on their toes, it was the big hits that got the warehouse in a frenzy. ‘Drugs From Amsterdam’ understandably got a huge reaction, with everyone in attendance shouting along to every word. His version of Tame Impala’s ‘The Less I Know The Better’ was another special moment, while the heavy bass on ‘Gimme That Bounce’ nearly blew the roof off.
It was a refreshing change of pace to see a show so focused on music alone. Without the pyrotechnics and over-the-top production that other shows may have resorted to, the focus remained firmly on the music. This was a great showcase for both the quality of the curation and Mau P’s technical skill.
The three-hour show was a treat for the Melbourne crowd, offering a level of depth and storytelling that he simply cannot get to with a festival or shorter club show. It was a masterclass in building a vibe and sticking with it for the long haul, a great showing for a debut show in Australia.
