Niko The Kid’s new single “Only One” feels and sounds like a smash hit from the second the needle drops. Light percussion and an array of synths back Maylyn’s gorgeous voice and vivid lyrics, while the track slowly builds to its apex. When the chorus and the drums finally hit the payoff is as satisfying as can be, with synths and strings soaring all the way into Verve “Bittersweet Symphony” territory. Maylyn meets the groove at every point, and the overall result is truly hypnotic and euphoric. One listen and you can’t shake the feeling you’re going to be hearing A LOT of this song. Niko explains the songs origins:
”Maylyn and I first met up over Zoom during the COVID lockdown days back in 2020. We wanted to create something haunting and dark. Initially, we wrote it at a much slower tempo which lent itself to the writing process. I was really inspired by the Freemasons version of Alanis Morissette‘s “Uninvited” which had this big beautiful string arrangement. So after recording all the vocals on her end, I locked myself in and started drafting the strings. I think I spent about a week programming the individual violins, violas, cellos, etc. After that, I sped it up and filled it out with drums, bass, and all. This may be my favorite record I’ve done to date.”
