Switched on Pop is a podcast about the making and meaning of popular music hosted by musicologist Nate Sloan and songwriter Charlie Harding. With weekly episodes this ones a great follow for any music lover, listener, producer, vocalist or A&R.

In this episode they discuss the Superhero theory about music icons and then pick one of the artists with one of the most interesting rises to fame. That being global phenomena Billie Eilish who has taken the world by storm since she was only 14 when she uploaded “Ocean Eyes,” to SoundCloud late one night only intending for her dance teacher to hear it. However the next day when she woke up the song went viral sending her into the spotlight and changing her life entirely.

Wind forward to 2019, she’s clocked up billions of streams and her debut album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” has been marked as one of the biggest Albums of the year, but despite all that now only 18 she’s still making her music with her Brother and co-producer FINNEAS in their child-hood home. She’s taken the stage at Coachella and toured the globe and this podcast explores why her music strikes a chord with the new generation both culturally and musically.

She’s further worked with Zedd on ‘Clarity’ with Matthew Koma, and releases with Beyoncé, Macklemore, David Guetta, Kaskade, Travis Barker, Eminem, Seeb, and soundtracks for Fifty Shades Of Grey, Suicide Squad and Aquaman.

Hailing from a small town in remote America we meet Skylar Grey, we hear about her musical influences starting of from her multi-instrumental mother and barbershop quartet performing father to how she dropped out of high school, her analytical creative process and much more.

She also details landing her first record deal with Warner Brothers, which she signed after playing some songs in a hotel lobby and how she was dropped soon after she put out her debut album.

When she was 6 she joined a musical and formed a band with her mum performing around the nearby towns, by 10 years old she was performing in an opera and by the age of 14 she’d made 3 albums worth of music. On this episode shares her journey to getting to where she is today, it’s no easy feat to turn music into a full time career.


Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom

This podcast tells you about a world that you wouldn't wish upon anyone. Some of the most harsh prisons on earth are situated in the USA. With over 2.2 Million prisoners, a number of them innocent. This show tells you their stories and how they ended up there. With the help of the Innocence Project and other foundations, Jason Flom as an ambassador for over 25 years has helped raise awareness and exonerate the innocent, you hear about this journey through Wrongful Conviction.

His day job however has been for greater part running some of the biggest record labels where he was Chairman or CEO of Atlantic and Virgin. He founded Lava Records in 1995 and while music doesnt feature in this show he is personally responsible for signing Katy Perry to Capitol Music and building acts from all genre's to stardom such as Lily Allen, Thirty Seconds To Mars and J Holiday. 

For the people Jason interviews, you grow a great admiration for the will power, strength of these individuals and realize how possible this is to anyone. Many of them were sentenced to life and spent over half there lives behind bars for a crime they didn't commit, some are still inside waiting appeal.

Throughout the show you learn about the biggest injustices of the legal system and just how unfair the bail system is, the level of corrupt cops and prosecutors, forced confessions, mishandling of evidence and bad legal advice from there own representatives.

Despite the heaviness of the situations, the stories are often inspiring understanding how they overcame and survived the dangerous and often harsh conditions. A number are now actively involved in helping inmates, youth and fellow wrong-full convicted inmates. 

Jason not only helps tell there stories but this podcast week by week interviews a wrongful convicted person and As well as the struggles they endured while incarcerated for crimes they didn't commit. breaks down the stories and injustices of their arrest, trial, sentencing. While most of these are now exonerated, some are still awaiting appeals.
