In December 2023, Boston-based artists Kmawa and William Wallace released “On the Low,” the standout single from their collaborative EP, Detaching. Kmawa, known for his alternative R&B creations, brings a rich tapestry of influences from his upbringing in a South Carolina Indian family. His music, enriched by the legacies of Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, and Michael Jackson, offers a medium for self-expression and an exploration of his Desi identity. William Wallace, whose work is influenced by the likes of J Dilla, Kanye West, and J. Cole, adds a blend of soulful beats, smooth vocals, and reflective lyrics to their partnership.

Meeting in 2018 after a decade in Boston, the pair discovered a mutual appreciation for soul samples, hip-hop, and whiskey, leading to the production of memorable tracks that blend ’90s hip-hop and R&B with contemporary sounds. Their latest single, “On the Low,” encapsulates a serene and hopeful hip-hop/R&B vibe, appealing to admirers of J. Cole, Little Brother, and Mac Miller. The music video, directed by Tim Barry, visually enriches the track’s relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

Kmawa and William Wallace remarked on their approach to music, highlighting the importance of authenticity and patience in an industry often driven by quick success narratives. Their dedication to producing genuine, innovative music shines through in “On the Low.”
