Electronic, alternative producer Surf Mesa collaborates with American songwriter Gus Dapperton, dropping new single ‘Somewhere’ on all platforms. Surf Mesa has taken his passion for gaming and consolidated his love for computers into a more productive form of expression. The rising musician recently has turned heads within the music industry, after releasing his hit single ‘ily (i love you baby)’ featuring Emilee back in 2019. The duo joined forces via TikTok, as he came across Emilee Flood covering an acoustic version of Frankie Vallies 1967 hit ‘I Can’t Keep My Eyes Off You’. The producer promptly created the hit single in one sitting, immediately receiving an inundation of record labels looking to sign the rising artist.

The young star’s buoyant theme within his music has engaged well-known artists around the world, including names as big as Marshmello, Hasley, BENEE and needless to say, Gus Dapperton. Surf Mesa underlines how he enjoys making songs that have soul, highlighting why these artists’ music styles mesh well. It is to be expected that this single is just one of the many growing collaborations that this artist will bring to fruition.

Willaris. K Releases Warehouse Oriented ‘Full Noise’ EP

0

Australian producer Willaris. K (Jack Mcallister) has today released his four-track rave EP, Full Noise, on Astralwerks. Following his latest single ‘Chapel’ featuring rapper and sound designer WaveIQ, Willaris rounds out the package with three driving tracks that flex his underground sensibilities.

The original goal of these productions was material for his sets, dating back to inclusions in 2018 performances. After a notably positive crowd reaction, Willaris. K was inspired to follow through with an official release.

In comparison to previous releases, Willaris crafts a collection of frenetic cuts fit for after hours sets. Full Noise invites collaborations with legendary musicians like Paul Mac and Seekae’s own George Nicholas.

Initiating with ‘Blunt Sword’, the cardinal beat coils into restricted, sparse moments of serenity. An expert in controlling tension, the track features Seekae’s George Nicholas, a formative influence in Willaris. K’s upbringing. While building the setup for his first live shows, ‘Tanzmaus’ emerged in a two-hour writing sprint, later becoming a crowd favorite and one of Willaris’ endlessly ID’d tracks. The EP closes with ‘Full Circle’ diving into Australia’s rich rave history through the stylings of Paul Mac, referencing his previous project Itch-E and Scratch-E.

Paul Mac shares  on ‘Full Circle’ – “I hadn’t done any techno collabs in a while. Jack got in touch, I listened to his music and thought.. yeah, this could be fun. We vibed off each other as soon as we met and came up with “Full Circle”. I love this track, writing it felt effortless and powerful at the same time. Now I just can’t wait to hear it on a sweaty dance floor”

GN on the background behind ‘Blunt Sword’ – “I met Jack a few years ago, after he emailed me some songs that I would go onto mix. I think we just got along really well and liked a lot of the same sad music, it was about time we wrote some songs together. “Blunt Sword” came about when we accidentally looped a section of audio which ended up being the main pulsing rhythm that runs throughout.”

A Hundred Drums Interview: Rebuilding Herself and Upcoming Music

Gabrielle Watson, the sonic sorceress known as A Hundred Drums, has continually made her mark on the music industry with strength and grace. The California grown, Denver-based multi-instrumentalist and bass producer infuses her classical training in percussion and various other instruments with her love for dubstep, reggae, and psytrance to create an unparalleled, organic, and soul-centering sound that not only excites, but soothes the senses.

Watson recognized her love for music at an early age, learning to play multiple instruments such as the saxophone, clarinet, and flute starting in the 2nd grade, but finding her center with the drums. “At 14, I sat at a drum kit for the first time and was like ‘this is the one,”’ said Watson. “I spent more time playing the hand drums because I couldn’t always have a drum kit. So, in all my music I play all the drums and percussion like shakers and bells and all things like that.”

Inspired by electronic music and festival culture, Watson began learning how to produce in unconventionally exciting ways, incorporating her musical skill-sets and hand drumming each beat, bell, and whistle to create a rhythmic collective that aligns the heart beats of all those listening. Therefore, the name “A Hundred Drums” is not only representative of Watson’s instrumental choices, but signifies how each individual heart beat synchronizes to the rhythm of the drums to create a grand, unifying beat connecting us all to one another.

In 2014, Watson and a few friends began to throw underground dubstep shows in Hollywood to supplement the lack of a distinctive bass scene and founded their own event and production company, B-Side, to bring more of what they love to her former home of Los Angeles. “We honestly started it for extremely selfish reasons,” Watson said. “We were like ‘If you guys wanna join you can, but we’re doing this for us. And it worked out for 6 years.” Watson continues to run and operate the company alongside co-founder Murad Rezian, in addition to her music and full-time job as a client success manager.

Her sedulity and tenacity has commended her performances at festivals like Tribal Gathering, Coachella, and Sonic Bloom, as well as high-profile bass events such as Bassnectar’s Deja Voom and Freestyle Sessions which were unfortunately cancelled due to the pandemic. Though she’s quickly climbing the ladder of success, A Hundred Drums has proved through countless years of hustling and perseverance that she deserves a seat at the playing table, and that she’s not only a master of the game, but has reinvented a whole new one of her own.

Watson has built a strong fanbase and earned the respect of her male counterparts that dominate the industry, yet it’s clear that A Hundred Drums is something that no one has ever seen or heard before.

“I do feel like a lot of times energetically it’s a little weird,” Watson shared. “ A lot of times when I’m booked for shows I’m probably one of the only females, but also the only person of color- and so that’s been a really interesting thing for me because it’s ‘oh I’m not only female, but I’m also brown.” Watson is half-African and half-Cuban.

Watson shared a particularly challenging event in her life where she was blacklisted by another producer who she had been dating when their relationship ended. Watson’s ex-boyfriend sought to publicly humiliate her and sabotage her music career by writing slandering Facebook posts and urging other producers to never work with her again. As a result, she received hate mail, messages from people all over the world saying that they seen or heard about the posts, and couldn’t even go to her local underground bass scene without being ignored, people gossipping, or moving away from her.

“He definitely destroyed me and I thought A Hundred Drums was dead.”

Discouraged and fearful that the entire world had seen the posts, Watson stopped making music and removed herself from the scene. Her story was discovered by Amplify Her— a documentary series focused on empowering women in the music industry– and was made into a graphic novel. “It was a really cool project and because of them they were the first people to ever help me find my voice in all of this and support me and share my story. And since then I’ve started to build myself back up again, and here I am today!”

Now, Watson is dedicated to being and enabling force for women and serves on the board of Shakti Sound, an all-female ran organization that organizes educational retreats for women in music, teaching music production, DJing, and everything in between– marketing, strategy, troubleshooting, breath and ceremonial work, and how to stay connected to oneself and spirit while working on music. In Hindu tradition, “Shakti” means “power,” and represents a divine, cosmic feminine energy that moves throughout the universe.

“We feel that empowering women and providing all these resources really helps with women to feel a lot more comfortable and supported during their musical journey.”

Watson currently resides in the musically rich city of Denver, Colorado where she enjoys taking her dog to the park in the time where she isn’t working or making music. Her self-titled, debut album was released earlier this year through Gravitas Recordings, followed by her recent single called “19,” a thrilling yet suspenseful product of the pandemic that further showcases her ability to rouse beauty out of the unfortunate.

In celebration of her upcoming birthday, A Hundred Drums is partnering with talented visualizer, Mezmer, for a live visual and audio performance on May 30th via lostinsound.live where she will be playing several new originals that won’t be released until after the show.

i_o & Lights Release First Single of AM 444, ‘Annihilation’

Kickstarting the final installment of the 444 trilogy, acclaimed electronic producer i_o has joined forces with Canadian alt-pop vocalist Lights to create the dark progressive house track ‘Annihilation,’ released via mau5trap. AM 444 is the concluding EP of a three part series titled 444, a project inspired by a New York City nightclub called 444 with an atmosphere similar to those that inspired i_o to become an artist.

“It wasn’t this room that I found myself in years ago, first hearing electronic beats spilling out to a crowd full of angsty teenagers, but it felt just the same,” he shared. “It was a room just like this one that inspired me to be an artist. Project 444 is a return to that for me. A journey into what makes i_o.”

Each chapter of the project captures the different areas of dance music that inspire i_o to create his own. While ACID 444 reflects the beginnings of warehouse techno and NRG 444 the more aggressive, uptempo dance music suited for a peak hour main room techno set, AM 444 is an ode to the dawning hours of the early morning when night becomes day– a more progressive EP featuring “longer tracks, more emotion [and] more melody—something that would be more akin to the early deadmau5 releases in the late 2000s,” he says.

With a much different feel than the first two installments of the project, ‘Annihilation’ is a softer, more melodic track that seamlessly infuses Lights’ ethereal vocals in a duet with i_o’s own over radiating synths and reverberating, progressive beats. The single also went #1 on Apple Music’s Electronic shortly after being released this past Friday.

i_o and Lights met while performing on Deadmau5’s cubev3 tour that spanned from September 2019 to early February 2020. While working on AM 444 during quarantine, their original vision transformed into a world of their own called EDEN. Each artist represents a voice of a different standpoint– one treating EDEN as a cyber-utopia that acts as a metaphor for escapism, and the other “an alternate consciousness in a dire world.” Through conflicting feelings of hope and despair, the powerhouse duo captures the feelings of uncertainty that most of us are feeling in the current state of the world.

AM 444 is set to release on May 29th, 2020 on Deadmau5‘s record label Mau5trap. The two artists also just released a music video teaser for what seems to be the EP’s next single, ‘RUN,’ which you can watch here.

updog Blends Both Rock & Electronic Together For Debut EP ‘balloon boy’

For his debut EP, updog blend electronic and rock elements to create a fusion of sounds throughout his 7 track ‘balloon boy’ EP.

Landing on CloudKid, this EP features harsh but enjoyable sounds from a range of different genres, resulting in a unique collection of singles. The strong vocals are a constant throughout the entire EP, featuring a range of deep and relatable lyrics. Fans of both electronic music and rock, will be fans of these tracks,

updogs music has explored the stages of a process that we’re all too familiar with… growing up. Whether it’s growing apart from people in ‘goodbye’; battling against responsibility in ‘dying breath’; or finding strength to make the right choices in ‘spearhead’, ‘balloon boy’ encompasses this journey perfectly. Manifesting these thoughts and frustrations into his tantalising rocktronic sound, with unforgettable melodies and impressive drops, there’s nothing else we’d rather be listening to right now.

Updog explains: “balloon boy is a journey following all the trials and tribulations you go through when you’re in the process of becoming an adult and reaching a point in life where you suddenly realize you have lost your real self. We all go through crippling insecurities, addiction, loss of friends, giving up our passions to pursue corporate careers, toxic relationships, etc, and eventually you probably won’t like what you see in the mirror

“‘Hell’ and ‘demons’ are ongoing motifs throughout many updog songs. In a non-religious way, ‘hell’ is something we live through everyday – encompassing everything that ruins us from being ourselves; and ‘demons’ are our own worst qualities – the voice inside our head that holds us back from being the person we’re meant to be. This EP was my therapy. It empowered me and brought a beam of hope, happiness and a change in the way I think. All in all it left me with one key motto to live by: ‘never growing up’. Keep your mind open to new things and changes, but never let go of who you were when you were young.”

This EP left me with one key motto to live by: ‘never growing up’. Keep your mind open to new things and changes, but never let go of who you were when you were young.”

updog’s past success speaks for itself, this latest EP is sure to follow suite and bring millions of listeners on board. Keep an eye out for this talent, he’s sure to make himself known throughout the scene.

Aweminus’ Newest Single “Stogned” Catches Us All By Surprise

0

Most are familiar with Aweminus (Brandon Famini) for his hard-hitting dubstep, riddim, and sometimes even drum ‘n’ bass. On April 17th, the producer decided to venture outside the box, surprising the bass music community with a stunning offering titled “Stogned.”

Truly coloring outside the lines with “Stogned” (pronounced ‘stoned’), it is definitely not your typical 140 BPM tune. With this single, Aweminus delivers an upbeat, bouncy record that drives a gritty bassline to rattle your eardrums. It’s fun, it’s energetic, and above all, it’s got Aweminus’ signature style written all over it.

Of course, there’s always some backlash from those monotone fans who don’t appreciate a little variation here and there; but there were also many others who were excited with the experimentation going on at camp Aweminus. A master of many styles, it’s safe to say that whatever the Never Say Die signee is willing to experiment with, we’re here for it.

Flume and Toro y Moi Link Up For Vibrant New Record ‘The Difference’

0

Flume has released his first single of 2020 in style, the record is an up tempo and melodic Drum and Bass track with Toro y Moi titled ‘The Difference’. The song was first teased on Flume’s Instagram where he mentioned that he had “created a drum and bass track with Toro Y Moi.” A little while after, a mysterious 32 second track titled “The Difference” by 300ZXZ31 (the number plate for the car from the Hi This Is Flume project) appeared on Flume’s Hi This Is Playlist. The random intro instrumental turned out to be the first 32 seconds of this collaboration. We’re still in the dark behind this 32 second tease, but it has us wondering whether we’ll see snippets of future Flume records under this 300ZXZ31 project.

Flume on the set of the ‘It’s Different’ Music Video

Flume had been a fan of Toro Y Moi for years, previously stating “Toro Y Moi’s song ‘Talamak’ is a long-time favourite. I listened to that one a lot when I first started Flume as a project.” The track came together when Toro visited Flume’s studio in LA, and aftering messing around over a day created this production.

The song is accompanied by visuals created by long-time collaborator Jonathan Zawada (Skin album and single art, Hi This Is Flume mixtape visualiser).

Flume has already confirmed several shows for 2020, Headlining Splendour In The Grass in Byron Bay as well as announced three Flume & Friends concerts at Colorado’s iconic Red Rocks. The events will feature SOPHIE, Toro Y Moi, Clams Casino, and others. These shows will go through the three different phases we’ve seen from Flume. Due to the recent global event cancellations, we’ll have to wait and see if these actually go ahead – fingers crossed they do!
